99 1.9 clutch problems - after_burners
hi, i was driving laguna 1999 dti yesterday and went to change gear and my foot went to the floor.

i took it to my local garage and they told me that it needs a new clutch cable. however, this was replaced 2 months ago. the garage then told me that oem cables dont last and i need a genuine one from renault.

is this correct or could it be other problems.

also if a pull the clutch lever back in to place the pedal returns to its normal position and i can use the clutch a few times before it hits the floor again.

Sounds like the spring that returns the pedal to it's normal position is popping off, or the clutch cable is getting snagged on something. If the cable is frayed within it's sleeve then this will happen.

it seems strange that an after market one will fail so quickly.

A clutch cable with the correct fittings at either end shouldn't fail in two months provided it is correctly fitted, lubricated and adjusted; and provided the clutch release mechanism is working as it should and not putting undue stress on the cable.

Aftermarket cables don't always have the right fittings at the ends although they can be bodged; cables hastily fitted by teenage monkeys in garages are not always correctly fitted or routed, or correctly adjusted for length, and may even have been damaged during installation; and not everyone remembers to lubricate the new cable, trusting that residual grease inside the sheath will do the job. Clutch release levers, often made of pressed steel and sitting on a ball, can run dry of luricant and bend, fail or perforate causing (before total failure) stiff operation which can break the cable.

If a garage has fitted a cable which has then failed quickly for any reason, complain by all means and torch the place if you must; but don't for heaven's sake let the idiots touch your car ever again.

ive only just bought the car, so yeah its going to a different garage.

the reciept the person i bought it of says

"weld on clutch bracket and new cable" £295

I would want to investigate that weld, or get a competent person to, and I would want to know why it had been necessary.
