96 1.6 juddering low revs and cutting out - mbmb11
My beloved old Polo will start up, rev to about 10, but then either decide to just stop or wait until ive just started to move off and then stop. Happens a lot when im idle at traffic lights etc too. (It now idles below 10). Sometimes takes a good 10-15 minutes to start up again, and then another 10 mins of revving to stabilise it. Am noticing that it is now dropping revs in 2nd gear too - although still runs a dream at speed or on a constant.

what did the garage say after it was serviced?
did they make any suggestions?

Could be ignition system (plugs, leads, dizzy (if fitted), coil) or fuel filter maybe?

Any other information?

Ok, the car was fully serviced and MOT'd a year ago and then off roaded for just under a year, (hubby bought newer car and kept this for me once i passed my test.) This has been occurring for past month or so, and is getting progressivly worse (cuts out at traffic lights almost daily now) Will be taking it for MOT and full service next week friday - just wondered if theres anything i should ask them to check, or stay quiet and see if they spot the problem first/the service cleans it up????

I would definatly mention it - so they can specifically look at components which may cause this. In the time before the test - try to gather as much information as to what it does and when so they can pin-point what to look at - also so you don't end up spending on lots of parts that "might" be causing it.

Just be warey of large bills without very good justification

ok passed MOT with no work needed and fully serviced yesterday. Feels smoother now but still having the same problem - asked if i needed a new fuel filter perhaps when i took the car in , and was offered to have new one fitted BEFORE theyd checked if i needed one or not. GUy reckoned the service would clean it all up and rectify the problem but it hasnt!!!! Have read that MOT includes having my fuel line checked, so have to rule that out? according to kwik fit car started up fine, which it does 50% of the time, dropping revs usually occurs about 15 mins onwards after starting to drive, and is always at idle or move off point (neutral or 1st gear). However once its cut out it can often take up to 10 mins to get it started again. its at the point where i dread stopping at traffic lights!! i really dont want to spend however much just to get this diagnosed - if anyone has had the same problem or recognises these symptoms, please reply!!!

well I'd take it to a VW speciallist or a dealer - not Kwik Fit!!

Could be lots of things....

had same problem with my polo, took it to VW for a diagnostics and they said it was a throttle body problem and I needed a new one at a cost of £480.
Spoke to a friend who is a mechanic and he said Polos are renowned for this problem, it was the throttle body, but it was just getting clogged up. I took off the air filter and got some carb cleaner from halfords for about a fiver. Turn the engine on and get someone to keep the car ticking over, then spray the carb cleaner and to the throttle body, lots of smoke will pour out but this is ok, its just grime and old oil. Mine ran fine after that, still quite low revs but not cutting out, I give it a spray every few months just to keep it clean now.
