Is it possible for someone with computer skills to reset a digital odometer? What safeguards are there to ensure they are not "wound back"?

It's possible for someone without computer skills to reset odometers.

Lots of companies advertise this service - to people with a bona fide need for it, of course.

Some people will do it for £20. But it is illegal unless you tell next owner that you've reset it.

You'd have thought that with CANBUS they could have about 10 different computers (climate control, ABS, airbag etc) all store a copy of the mileage, and then simply have the dash correlate those sources. Epoxy the chips into place and it instantly becomes an incredibly time-consuming and expensive job to fiddle the mileage, and there are no issues following a replacement instrument cluster.

But hey, what do I know? ;-)

Its disturbing for used car buyers just how easy these things are to do.

In the hands of a minicab driver/courier some cars can easily have covered 100K in 2 years, long before the MOT's give any kind of usage guidance or mileage corroboration.

A car with an odometer that zeros at 100k could show 20k at three years, appears low milage. But for a minicab driver 120k in three years is easily possible, working 48, 5 day weeks in a year would only need to averate 166.67 miles per working day and thats assuming no personal usage.

on my car the mileage is stored in the light control module for the exact reason you describe. It is quite effective as an attempt to fiddle leaves an 'err' message' instead of numerics on the mileage display.

Why go to all that expense? When you may have to then replace individual boxes due to early failure and have to create and manage the cluster.
Manufacturers already store this mileage, even if you have the car serviced abroad (well decent manuf's do).
