00 2.0 Cambelt Change after 8 years? - honda user
Hello all,

I have an accord, 2000 with only 44K miles and was wondering how reliable the cambelt set up on these are? It is the 2.0 vtec engine (petrol).

My car has been doing only 5K miles a year and was always serviced at an authorized honda dealer.

Should I change cambelt now due to car age or can I wait.

I will be grateful for any opinions,

No idea what the recommended interval is, but rubber deteriorates with age as well as use. It doesn't matter if it's low mileage, most if not all manufacturers specify to change at 'x' miles or 'x' years - whichever comes the soonest.

Actually, thinking about it there's probably more stress put on a belt with low mileage as it's often left in one position more than a car that's used regularly.

I don't think you have much to worry about - Hondas from that era use high quality materials - but I would get it changed anyway. As DD says, time takes its toll on us all.

It would be prudent to change the belt after 8 years in service.

Perhaps VAG would like to learn a thing or two from Honda concerning belt life - their recommendation is 4 years' use max.

On the other hand, VAG might just have "got the maintenance schedule wrong".
