04 1.6 rear window not closing - annieoaks
Can anyone help please. As a lady owner and not knowing much about car mechanics , I took my car to the Megane dealer yesterday as my back window won't close. I have been told its a fault - think he said regulator needs replacing - and been quoted nearly £500. Is this a fair price does anyone know? Thanks

Get a price from another Renault dealer for comparison.

Take a look at :

Whole lot of stuff about the sorry saga of failed window mechanisms on Mk 3 Meganes and possibilities for rectification. The earlier models were OK - probably too soon to comment on the latest model.

It is indeed a common fault, and is caused by the flimsy piece of plastic that moves the glass up and down shearing in two. This piece of plastic is not available separately, and requires replacement of the entire regulator, complete with motor. When I checked in February last year, the part alone for my 2004 Grand Scenic was £230 + VAT.
There are kits which allow the regulators to be rebuilt, but be careful. When mine failed, the cables were thrown off, and one got stuck between the motor and the frame, damaging it.
In my case, Renault UK were extremely helpful, and arranged for my local dealer to install a new regulator at no cost to myself. The car was only a few months out of warranty, in fairness, but all credit to them.
When they were quoting me for the work, the dealer wanted an hour's labour to install it. They reckoned about £350 all in, so £500 sounds a lot to me. That was for a front regulator on a Grand Scenic, so slightly different, but I can't imagine the procedure is radically different.
