Getting what I think is an excellent deal scrapping an old and very rusty Fiesta diesel for a new Golf for my mum. Has anyone driven the new Golf with the 1.6TDi 90 bhp engine? Is there a roadtest anywhere for it? Thanks

FYI Skoda are doing a £3500 scrappage deal on diesel Octavia's by the way.

Not that engine specifically, but:

Can you get a test drive in one?

Yes will call at dealers tomorow with paper work for the Fiesta. Scrappage deal says must be taxed at time of order -wonder can I chip in the tax after that? Octavia would be my choice but she has seen a black Mk6 and likes the look of it. Golf Tdi 5 door should be coming in for less than £12k.

It might be a bit of a slug - hence the availabilty of a good deal no doubt. A Golf is a heavy car for 90 bhp.
It might be worth seeing what deal is available on the more powerful 1.6 diesel (if she needs a diesel) or a 1.4 122 bhp petrol (if she doesn't).
|
If it has enough low down torque, you shouldn't need to thrash it so much but then again newer Golfs are getting heavier so it may struggle.
|
Isn't the Mk6 golf supposed to be lighter than the Mk5? I think new cars are slowly starting to get lighter than the model they replace. I now for sure the new Polo will be lighter than the current one.

I had a Mk6 Golf from Hertz a couple of weekends ago. It was diesel, but no badge on the back to tell me what particular engine was in it.
I have never known such a gap between what the road tests said and my personal experience. It was the worst modern car I have driven in about 20 years.
Very good ride and very well built. But against that.
A truly awful gear shift (5 speed box on the one I had). Utterly hopeless performance - almost milk float slow. Soggy and unrewarding handling.
I loathed it.

Just as a matter of interest, what do you usually drive?

Just the opposite, I had a hire Mk6 Golf a few weeks ago. Similarly it was a diesel with no engine badge on the back, but I was told it was a 2litre. (I was upgraded at no cost.......I'd only asked for a Focus/equivalent so I wasn't expecting it anyway). I was extremely impressed with the Golf. I did a round trip from Nottingham to North Wales and back with an average of over 65mpg. If I had to do regular large mileages I would seriously consider it.

I'd expect the 90PS engine to be a bit underwhelming in a Golf. However, has anyone driven the 105PS 1.6TDI yet? Given that the 1.4TSI 122PS engine can't be had for love nor money at the moment, this would appear to be the next best thing for Golf S trim level, which doesn't get the more powerful engines available for the SE or GT.
|
We had an Audi 80 with 90 nominal hp. It was fine. But I suspect it gave more than the rated power, and it had a little more torque possibly than a 1.6. But if you don't need a big output, is 90hp plus decent toque a real issue for day to day driving? Ford did a survey and found that very few drove their petrol engines to near max output:) Its only journalists wot obsess about 0-60.
|
On checking, the 1.6 TDI seems to have more torque (170lb ft) than the old 90hp 1.9 diesel we had (pre PD) and also there is a 105hp/185 lb ft version. Things move on apace.
Who's going to drive this? If mum is happy with the lowest output then thats all that matters. When my sister bought a new Twingo, she was pestered by No1 son to get the turbo 100hp version, rather than a diesel which she has always preferred. It was just for his ego, if/when he passes the test:) BTW, the 1.4 petrol TSI has similar torque to the older design 1.9 diesel, with quicker acceleration off the line, for the boy-racer tendency. Try before buying of course.

Well VW (local dealer) to apologise for the delay have just delivered a new Polo 'BlueMotion'. Bloomin' heck - did a work run in it today around 100 miles. Reset the the computer at the start and without much effort returned on average 81.7 mpg. The diesel guage didn't move and yes traffic was light. Amazin' wee car.
|
I've just taken delivery of a Mk 6 1.9 Tdi 90 5-dr. My impressions are:
- Performance is good, i.e. plenty of torque and pretty nippy around town. Plenty of performance unless you are some 0-60 obsessed journo. Effortless crusing on motorway - 65 mpg no problem.
- Engine is amazingly refined, does not sound like a diesel at all and very smooth delivery.
Car is really well put together and very quiet, no rattles etc so far
Our other car is a 07 Passat SE Tdi 140 Estate. Have to say I hardly notice any difference in performance and the Golf is so much smoother and nicer to drive.
I got a scappage deal on this with with ~4.5K off list, only found one VW dealer who would haggle. All other dealers were not even really interested in doing the vanilla scrappage deal.

I thought when I ordered my new 1.6 Tdi S 5door that I was taking a slight risk in buying a 90PS 5 door hatch in terms of potentially poor performance!! The local VW dealers did not have a 1.6tdi for me to test drive but assured me I would not be disappointed. After loads of googling I noted copious comments of a positive nature so I ordered my 4th Vw (never been disappointed before).
Well after 2000 miles of mixed driving over the month of September I have to say I am very impressed with this car. It is so smooth and quiet (very unlike any 4 cylinder diesel I have ever driven) and performance is effortless in all situations. Its quite lively actually and although absolutely no 0-60 demon it is adequate in 'normal' day to day driving. I have been getting 55mpg over the recent 2000 miles and I am not exactly light on the right foot up to speed limits of course!!
Only complaint seems to be from passengers in the back seat. Although having adequate leg room, complaints have centred around the rear bench i.e. it has been described like a park bench! No complaints in the front though - in fact very comfortable.
Recommend this model for sure.

Nice post, and it taught me a thing or two. I would have said that 1 1.6Tdi wouldn't be that economical with someone who has a heavy right foot like me driving it, but what you have said proves otherwise - it can certainly copy with this treatment.
Do you think that you car feels smooth and quiet because of the improvements in soundproofing and other areas which the Mark 6 Golf has - or do you credit the engine entirely?
As for the passengers complaining - give them cushions or something. As long as the driver is satisfied.... :-)
Seriously, I hope that you get many years of satisfaction from your Golf. It sounds a very likeable car from your account.

Well at long last and coincidently my mum's was delivered today. I am well impresssed and as already stated no 0-60 demon it is very tractable, supremely quiet and very well built. Resplendent in black it looks quite smart too. Mind you she was very sad to give up the wee Polo Bluemotion. Averaged over 75mpg over the past few weeks and very 'parkable'!

Half a dozen Ikea cushions should keep them quiet in the back - eh - LOL!!!
There is no doubt that this new Tdi engine takes refinement to a different level for VW 4-cylinder diesels and VW engineers can be very satisfied by their efforts.

Would be interested to know where in the country this dealer is located.
Thanks in advance.
