Off to suffolk Saturday. Need suggestions please for a nice pub, good food, garden and dog friendly if possible, bout 45 mins to hour up the A12 Say colchester way.

West Mersea I think, 10 minutes past Colchester, fish place among a lot of yachts, excellent but you have to take some bread and butter and wine... oysters if you dare in a non-R month too. Get there early or you may have to wait for a table. Not expensive, and decent fish.

Dunno about the dog though AE. Perhaps since you have to go prepared it isn't the sort of place you need this time. But if it is, you won't regret it.
|
Wivenhoe is a charming river/estuary front place just to the south of Colchester.
Can't give any specific recommendations, but there are a few pubs and hotels down there, and there's always the yacht club if you fancy a pink gin.

|
Restaurant on Mersea is the "Factory Shed"-excellent but a long way from A12.

Try the Anchor at Nayland or the Sun at Dedham. Food extremely good at both.
Would also recommend the new online searchable version of the Good Pub guide - have always found the paper version indispensable. Both of the above appear in the guide.
|
|
I can second the Anchor at Nayland. Humungous portions of good food at reasonable prices served by friendly people. Advisable to book though as it does gt busy, especially if weather is nice. Then you can stroll the fields at the back, stroke a pig or two.

stroke a pig or two.
Remember to take some Oinkment.

And the winner was ....
The Anchor at Nayland
Good call, excelent food, the smoked platter from their own smoke house was the biz.
By the cringe, the Pubs in suffolk tho are excelentooooooooo.
|
.....and the winner was, The Anchor, Nayland.............
Ah, but did you stroke a pig in the back garden (if you'll pardon the expression!)

Nah it seemed rude to handle the food.

As CG says Dedham's quite a nice place. Just off A12 Stratford St Mary turn off. Does get very busy though. What part of Suffolk are you visiting?

Got use of a cottage just outside southwold for a week.

Lots of nice places around there AE, Dedham and Flatford would get my vote if it is outside dining nr Colchester you're looking for. Plenty of nice pubs, or if you want somewhere a little more upmarket, Milsoms is good. www.milsomhotels.com/milsoms/
If you want to carry on up the A12 a bit further then there is a lot of nice pubs around Woodbridge. If you do a search for "Deben Inns" you will find the Maybush at Waldringfield, and also the Fox at Newbourne. Both are within 10mins of the A12, and serve lovely food with lots of space outside.

Persoanlly though, if its sunny, carry on up the A12 and get some Fish & Chips in Aldeburgh en route to Southwold.....incredible, and worth the hype.

Can't help with your lunch query but I do hope you enjoy cottaging in Suffolk

Maybush at Waldringfield. Turning by Martlesham Telecom tower. There is only the pub a marina and an estuary at the end of the road so you can't miss it. The only draw back is that its such a lovely spot that if the weather's nice and you leave it too late you won't get near the place. If you're out for a drive during the week you'll probably be ok.
|
A bit further on, so more like Woodbridge, but actually on the A12.

I can recommend the farm cafe, especially their breakfasts! You cant miss it, its just after the A12 goes from dual to single carriageway on the stretch past Framlingham/Ufford etc, on the right hand side.
Watch out for speed cameras on this stretch, its ideal for speed testing and the Police are fully aware of it; there was a story in yesterdays paper (local) about a guy who got caught at 125mph in his 911 along this bit of road and I have several friends who have been stopped too..........
|
Thanks guys
The Aldborough fish and chips are being saved for one evening. I have had them before, the wife and dog haven't. Yes its one of the few things in life that has matched the hype!

The Jubilee - Old Ipswich Road, Ardleigh, Colchester, CO7 7QJ - allows you to have a very decent meal a mere 5 minutes from the A12 by the junction with the A120 to Harwich. Not sure on the dog friendliness but good food in unpretentious but perfectly acceptable surroundings.

Google a place called Pinmill. There's a pub there and a nice quiet estuary on the River Orwell and parking.
It's off the A12 and you can see the estuary and bobbing yachts as you cross the Orwell bridge.
p.s don't forget to visit the pier at Southwold or try the fish and chips at Dunwich.
A fantastic gem of a place.
|
The pub at Pinn Mill is the Butt and Oyster, a friends parents are the landlords there; its part of the Deben Inns chain that I linked to above and can be found on that website.
Lovely setting, bit further from the A12 though, probably 20 minute drive (along a lovely winding A road though :-))

I used to hold the record for the biggest 'dab' caught off the Pier - was taken to a little hut where the weight and measurements were recorded - tasted good too! Caused extremely sulky elder brothers for several days ;-)
