The 1.9 diesel unit offered by VW amongst others must be used in more different cars than most engines. It seems to power anything from Polos to Audi estates. Any other contenders for 'King engine' title.

Chevy small block V8, must be getting on for 100,000,000 built.
|
Ford Kent engine and its varients, used from 1959 to 2002 and the block itself even later.
|
I think I`ve gone off course with you Rattle - because the OP reads as present production engines to me.
|
I see nothing about "current production" in the OP but I am interested to know which current production Ford engine uses the OHV(not called Kent in all variants) block.

Must be quite a few air-cooled VW engines about since every Beetle had one in the boot.

"Ford Kent engine and its varients, used from 1959 to 2002 and the block itself even later".
Thats a bit like my broom, It's about twenty years old but it's had ten new heads and six new handles!

PSA group 1.6 and 2.0 diesel as used by PSA group themselves, Ford and Volvo found in 1.8 million vehicles in 2007.
Volvo D5 also is used as a marine engine - Volvo Penta.

The Honda 50 moped engine has been in production for nearly 30 years. I should think that it is easily the most numerous one, including in-life mods and alterations. There have been 2 and 4 stroke versions which aren't the same, obviously, but the 4 stroke has been produced in higher numbers.
|
The 1.5 litre engine in the Mk1 and Mk2 VW Golf started out as an Audi unit and the engine block was used in all sorts of VAG products, both petrol and diesel, including the 2.0 litre Mk5 Golf GTI.

"The Honda 50 moped engine"
Sounds plausible, especially when you consider the Chinese copies seen (here) in every current monkey bike, but that must also power a few million Chinese mopeds!
I should think that the Honda 125 engine (as in the CG125) is likely runner up - that seems to be copied by everyone, too!

I'll second the SBC.
In continuous production since the '50s and used in everything from cars to aircraft, boats and industrial machinery.
It makes a wonderful noise too.

I`m with the Honda 50cc overhead cam engine - My sister had one in 1967 and how many were sold across just South East Asia - for example?
I had the 90cc version of this engine in 1966 too. Are these (externally identical) engines still in production after all these years, or are they significantly changed?
|
I'd tend to agree with the moped engine as well... I'd be surprised if 100 million chevvy engines have been made, though...

Little lawnmower Briggs & Stratton engines. They seem to be everywhere
|
What denotes a "common" engine?;the same design of engine even tho' bore/stoke changes?;head/combustion chamber/valve size?.So many things can be related to the same basic design-even four/six/eight/twelve cylinders-just achieved by lengthening the engine.Or are we talking one identical engine?-very uncommon-there are always minor changes.

Honda used to claim the GC160 overhead cam four-stroke single and its variants was the most common engine in the world and I wouldn't disagree. Go-karts, cement mixers, pumps, lawn mowers, generators, cultivators, etc, etc, etc...

"Honda used to claim the GC160 overhead cam four-stroke single and its variants was the most common"
I doubt they would include copies, though!
