5 seat convertible - Robin Tucker
Just a thought given my 3 kids.
Does anyone know of any 5 seat convertibles?

Saab 900 Convertible. - David Woollard
What a coincidence this thread should be here today.

Had a day over at the "posh" side of the family in The Cotswolds yesterday. I was asked to advise on a Saab 900 convertible for a family/second car, and to comment on what could be found for £10,00.

Now in the 80s I owned three Saab 900s so know that model well, and lately have been offered/seen very cheap 9000s.

But as to this 900 convertible, I know very little.

So are they any good as a family car? Is the HJ guide right in saying they are poor to drive? Are they still a Cavalier based vehicle or is the convertible a one-off bodyshell. What goes wrong that HJ hasn' covered? Do the hoods last, how much?

I was horrified by the prices when checking this morning, £10,000 for a '94? OK so it has prestige but there are some really good quality family cars of that age at auction for under £2000 these days.

And if you had to spend the whole £10,000 a nearly new Mondeo should impress?

What do you think.

Thanks,

David

Has anyone found a new shape Mondeo for £10,000 yet? Trade Sales want £11,500 for a new one, but Ford is likely to keep as many as it can off the market to keep prices up, just like they did with the old Mondeo. As for convertibles, check the width of the rear seat of SAAB 900s and Audi 80s before describing them as 5 seaters. I certainly wouldn't want to share the back seat with two other people (well not with blokes anyway). And, yes, the SAAB 900 and 9-3 are Cavaliers (not even Vectras) in drag, though the weak scuttle of the Cavalier must have received some attention or the car would fall apart.

Surfing over a late breakfast HJ?

I didn't mean that I had seen a new Mondeo for £10,000, you'll be the first to tell us I bet. Just that this deal is anticipated later in the summer/autumn and by then there may be a few about.

HJ is right about the room in the back - most of these models have less room in the back than the equivalent Saloon to make room for the hood folding mechanism. We have an Astra Convertible and that only has 2 bucket seats in the back, and when we looked at the Saab it was similar I think (We didn't look too hard as it was out of our price range) Although you might have only small children you might also want to check that there is a 3rd Seat Belt in the back. Moving downmarket slightly from everyone else's suggestions there is also the Rover 200 Soft top which had too much of an Old Man's image for my better half. That's probably because she lives with one and didn't want to drive one as well!

How about a Mercedes C300 convertible - about L - M reg should be availible under 10 grand ? ? or am I barmy ?

or how about a Triumph Stag ?

It certainly would need 3 rear seat belts.
All the convertibles I peep in just have 2 (or do the owners just keep the middle one hidden down the back of the cushion?)
