With the government pushing manufactures to make less polluting cars, why are councils allowed to cause it by putting in speed bumps, which are reckoned to increase car pollution output by 89%?

And needless traffic lights... at least turn them off out of rush hours!

And needless traffic lights...
Don't get me started on that, our nearest roundabout on the bypass used to flow well at all hours until in their infinite wisdom we gained lights, now on the way to work at 4am i sit for anything up to 10 minutes for the 3 sets as i'm turning right.
Alternatively i could go through several estates and over dozens of humps and a village instead, i could of course get the bus(es) and start work at 8.30...

Thats the problem with local authorities (and others) who have to justify their budgets by spending all of them. I was told to refurnish my office before the end of a financial year for that reason when I worked for a council.

Local authority A decides to reduce traffic in it's area with humps etc. Traffic goes to area B which does the same. Traffic goes to C ad infinitum. Result gridlock.

Because that wouldn't have the intended social effect. These sanctions are not really imposed on us for our own good. Power=Fear and those in power need to continually cause fear by things such as terrorism, health & safety, avian/swine flue, acid rain, speed kills, coldwar, ozone layer, carbon footprints etc... It's nothing new, and I'm sure in the future we will see hydrogen pawprints.
