Has anybody got personal experience of using OBD-II code readers and software on their car. I've seen software "able" to display real time sensor information and digital speedometer on a laptop.

What do you want to know? Is it for cars in general or your own particular bolide? OBDII is a useful tool in diagnosing problems when you can look at real time values and compare them to known specs.

I have recently purchased a '98 Volvo V70 and being a sceptic was wondering if I should look at getting one of these systems and taking downloads while the car is running good , rather than wait until a fault occurs and then start worrying.

Unfortunately you would need to spend in the region of £3000 to get a piece of kit suitable to read the system comprehensively. Wait until you get a problem then call in an expert to rent his equipment to diagnose the fault!

I have seen a connector from an American company Multiplex Engineering , I have emailed them for details.
