Why some main dealer do not do tax free car sale ? - craig1108
Actually, I went to Benzs main dealer today required a tax free car sale for exporting to hong kong, they said that they do not do it without any reason. In addition, the purchased of the new car will be exporting directly to HK without registering a UK owner.

I do not know why they do not allow me to pay the car price without vat even if i meet the following regulation. Could someone tell me where can i get a brand new car with tax free ?

In the HM custom rule, it said

The Personal Export Scheme (PES) allows entitled customers to purchase a motor
vehicle in the UK free of VAT for export outside the European Community. Subject to
some restrictions the vehicle may also be used for a limited period in the EC before
being finally exported to a destination outside the EC.

You can use the Scheme if you are:

(a) an Overseas visitor. This means that you have not been in the EC for more
than either:
? 365 days in the two years before the date when you apply to use the Scheme; or
? 1095 days in the six years before the date when you apply to use the Scheme;
and
? you intend to leave and remain outside the EC with the motor vehicle for a period
of at least six months; and
? you comply with all the other conditions of the Scheme.

(b) an Entitled EC resident. This means that you have been in the EC for more
than:
? 365 days in the two years before the date when you apply to use the Scheme; or
? 1095 days in the six years before the date when you apply to use the Scheme;
and
? you intend to leave and remain outside the EC with the motor vehicle for a period
of at least six months; and
? you comply with all the other conditions of the Scheme.

I'd inquire of MB HQ rather than a dealer who may not grasp what you're on about.

There used to be personal export schemes for diplomats and HM forces overseas but I doubt there are the numbers to justify manufacturers running whole offices devoted to that sort of thing today.

Only a few dealers do it. Mostly the london ones. MB world at Brooklands will do it.

Mercedes-Benz Export sales are handled by a specialist department rather than individual dealers.

MB Export used to be based at MB Mayfair but when that closed they transferred to MB Corporate offices in West London.

According to the MB website you can contact them on 0208 991 3018.

Isn't this a stark demonstration of the service levels offered by main dealers?

Were the staff so busy that they couldn't assist the OP by getting the info provided by rjr?

Thx your for your answer. Actually, I have called them before, they said that there is no any tax return if you export to Hong Kong. However, the UK custom said that you are totally qualified to get back the tax as long as you take a brand new car out of EU country.

I do not know why i cannot get back the tax return ......

Diplomatic and tax-free sales are usually handled directly by the makers' HQ.

A long time ago when I bought a car tax free for export (a Ford), I had to contact Ford UK headquarters who nominated a dealer with whom I then completed the transaction. Most dealers will not be set up for VAT free sales and probably won't even know the scheme exists. Even the HQ back then had trouble because they were set up for selling tax free to diplomats and people in the forces and I was neither.

Car dealers are exploiting a tax loop hole. Customs/Excise confirm dealers have a requirement (assuming all Personal Export Scheme reqs are met) to provide but dealers aren't honoring. There are various ways they get around the scheme, incl. taking VAT on the vehicle sale and not disclosing at a company VAT level.

There are benefits to the dealer otherwise apart from a single PES form and fax to send, there would be no other impact for them, apart from a sale!

This should be put into context - UK suppliers generally are reluctant to get involved in exporting. Given there are a minmum of 6 million British ex-pats you would think that there was a ready-made market, however, the vast majority of on-line suppliers seem to have a UK only policy. Living in Spain, I usually find it's easy to deal with continental Europe countries, the US, or Hong Kong. Given the past "nation of shopkeepers" tag, it's seems extraordinary.
