01 1.6 loud clicking noise when reversing - djuplifter
Hi there,
I have a problem when reversing my Golf, it makes a loud clicking noise every time, which sounds mechanical and can be heard outside the car and inside. Is there a problem with my reverse gear? What can be done to resolve this?

the 1.6 golfs and polos had diff issues,a pin comes loose and smashes diff up,get it seen to quick!

Hi, thanks for the reply. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the diff? Where should I take it to to get it looked at? Is it expensive to get repaired?

diff is part of the gearbox on a front wheel drive car,most garages can do this and theres some dedicated gearbox repairers who can do this as well.
take it to a reputable garage and get them to have a look at it,prefer a vw specialist.
where abouts are you,if your near one our recomended garages then use one of them.

It is possible that it is the CV joint, did you have the car in full lock when you were reversing?

Hi there,
No the noise occurs as soon as you reverse and you can steer and still hear it.

sounds like you have the duu code gearbox. I cant remember where this is marked on the box now. It failed on my 1.6 octavia. the pins broke free on the diff and shattered the casing with no warning.

The OP's noise is only in reverse so more likely to be the reverse idler is missing teeth or something. Regards Peter

Peter, yes you are right it does only make the noise when in reverse and is fine changing gears going forwards. If there are missing teeth on the reverse idler, what's needed to repair and is it pricey?

Sparky93, thanks for the articles, gearboxes seems like a common fault! I will examine the code in the photo's to see if mine is the DUU gear box.
