Best route: Sheffield to Lake District? - pete&hisgolf
What would be the quickest route from South West Sheffield to Ambleside early on a Saturday morning? I'm aware that part of the A629 near Huddersfield is closed and there is a diversion.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using Google maps ? maps.google.co.uk/

It allows you to drag the suggested route around, although when I just tried Sheffield to Ambleside I don't think it included the A629 (it claimed 127 miles, 2:36).

Try the AA Route planner and/or www.viamichelin.com. From Central Sheffield Michelin suggests:-

M1, A616, A628, M67, M60, M61, M6, A591. 140 miles and 2 hrs 30 mins

Can you not go via Peak District? thru A57 Snake Pass.

It would be good to cover Peak District as well :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. It looks like Snake Pass is the way to go, rather than the M62.

Just my 2p's worth. I try and avoid Snake or Woodhead and prefer to go M1-M62 if I go near Manchester. HGV's and then the tail backs at Tintwistle.

we did this last weekend. took the M1 / A1M north until the turning for Bedale, then take the A684, through Leyburn, Hawes and Sedburgh, coming out at J37 of the M6 [Kendal Junction]. You're then at the South Lakes, or if you want the North Lakes, I'd take the M6 to Junction 40 - it is probably the most beautiful stretch of motorway anywhere in the country. The A684 isn't the quickest route, but it is a fantastic drive. Quickest route for the north lakes might be M1/A1 to Scotch Corner, or via Snake Pass, but I think Snake Pass is still closed on the weekends.......

The A684 off the A1(M) through Leyburn, Hawes and Sedburgh is a scenic drive, but very slow in places, 30mph limit for a stretch, even though you are in the middle of nowhere.

Having said that, it's the most direct route to Kendal, which you can't easily avoid if you are heading for Windermere/Ambleside.

If it's to be the A1(M), probably better to take Route 66 from Scotch Corner - the first few miles have recently upgraded, so it can be quite a quick run across.

It's then the A685 from Brough through to Kendal.

That's not the best of roads, either.

Mmm, perhaps you'd be better off going up the other side of the country. :)

Early Sat morning won't mean lots of HGVs. Sheffield to Manchester via Snake or Woodhead, M60 anticlockwise, M61, M6.
