Hello,
My 1.9 TDI DSG Golf has done just over 60k miles. When should the cambelt be changed and what is a reaonable price for doing this job(I will not be using a main dealer).
Thanks for your help.

I think the current recommendation is every 4 years. I had mine done recently by a VW mechanic (as a foreigner) for£100 labour. The VW bits he supplied cost £58 including water pump. My AAM engine is a single cam.

At 60K you are pushing it slightly now. VW recommend 40K or 4 years whatever comes sooner as the belt on the PD lump is highly stressed due to the unit injectors. If you don't want to go down the main dealer route (can't blame you) seek a good independant (plenty around)
It is also recommended that you get the Water Pump changed at the same time as most are a plastic impellar which eventually wear on the shaft and stop rotating (impellar not shaft) to get this changed is a cambelt off job anyway so for the price of the pump (if you can find a metal impellar pump happy days) and a couple of minutes labour is money well spent.
Where are you located??

Hello Grease Monkey,
I'm in Sevenoaks, Kent, I have it booked in this Thurs with my local independent, who serviced it last year. I 'll let you know how much it costs. He gave me a ball park figure of approx £200, however was told this depends on which cambelt was needed as he said there was a choice of two.

When I looked into this on my Passat PD130 it was 60K miles or 4 years**.
However the Passat doesn't run the water pump off the cambelt.
Don't discount the VW dealer for the job, mine was within £20 of the price quote by two trusted independents.
** In the USA, the cambelt interval for the 1.9 PD motors is 100K miles (no time / year interval specified). Is that because they use a different / stronger cambelt, or is it because of differing public expectations? You decide :)

Just spoke to my local VW dealership. They are doing a 'promotion' £299 for the cambelt change. if the water pump needs doing then approx another £100.
So £400!!!!
And they wonder why no one goes to get their car serviced at a dealership!!!!
