Mine is definately chain, either that or its got to 168k miles on a belt!!!

Remove the engine cover, a belt will be on one end of the engine, usually under a plastic cover, but always away from the oil.

A chain is buried inside the block as it needs an oil supply.

You beat me to it spikeyhead.

What on earth is the matter with people these days?

If you can't even tell how the camshaft is driven just by looking at the engine, then you had better hope for honest and competent garages and mechanics.

Because they can say anything they like to you, almost, and you won't be able to assess it. You will be COMPLETELY AT THEIR MERCY. Yes, I was shouting. Seems to me inconsiderate to put temptation in the poor fellows' way.

Hi the 2.0 TDCi engines are chain driven, they are behind a big metal cover on the o/s of the engine!

I know this question is sorted now, but as a general tip, sometimes you can see the cam chain through the oil filler neck depending of course where on the cam cover the cap is located. That's certainly the case with my mum's StreetKa.

Any engine with a black plastic cover mounted on the end (drivers side) is likely to be belt driven.
