Can anyone tell me how i can gain extra bhp and increase the performace of my zx

Rich,
I'm not sure why you'd want to! When this engine was first introduced in the ZX it won rave reviews as taking the diesel car onto a new level of performance and refinement.....with good reason.
Many petrol engine tuners would be pleased to find the "real life driving" surge of mid-range pull these cars have.
I've experience of loads of these engines and would say by far the biggest difference now will be their condition due to the quality of maintenance. If you have a good one under perhaps 150,000mls with no running faults and clean filters it should be excellent.

David,
Rich doesn't say if his is turbo, just 1.9 - I'd say probably a N/A. Hence performance is a bit on the slow side, and there's very little can be done about it.
If it is a TD, then boost pressure and fuelling can be increased, but as has been pointed out before this is at the expense of increased turbo speed and possible engine damage.

Richard,
Ah yes...never thought he may have a non-turbo. If so the easy answer is to sell the present car and buy a TD. Huge increase in performance for a few hundred pounds.
If it is a TD already I stand by my comments that Citroen got that one 100% right as standard.

I've just bought a 93 ZX 1.9D non-turbo. I'm in the same boat as you - in that I'd love to improve the performance of the diesel ZX. Thing is, I may be alone here, but I think the ZX diesel is incredibly heavy for its size (probably down to the engine weight), and I'm probably going to go for a petrol model next. As I wanted a 3-door, I'm almost certainly going to be looking for the Holy Grail unless I win the lottery. My advice is, if you're happy with the ZX, stick with it. The 1.9D was the only one that Parker's Guide didn't list lots of faults against, like injection or turbo problems. Rgds Dom F

...and if it's a non Turbo, don't even think about fitting a Turbo. Jeremy Fearn quoted me £1200 + VAT about 5 years ago, and that's probably more than a ZX diesel is worth nowadays.
DW's advice is very sound. Incidently, I thought the ZX D drove quite well, for all that it's only got 70bhp. A caravan slows it down a bit, though.
