98 3.2 Stalling at speed - franklin
Engine stalls at speed on the motorway - every few months. Very scary!

Usually happens near an airport and the Jag repairer we use says it may be due to electronic interference - but yesterday it happened twice, going north on the A1(M) near exit 7 and on the way home going South on the A1 near South Mimms.

Anyone else had this problem? and any ideas as to the cause ?

When my lovely green Vectra went through a phase of random stalling at speed it turned out to be the injector / fuel pump relay on the way out.

Thanks - I'll get that looked at.

Bit more information required. Does it just cut as if you had turn the igntion off, or start to hesitate/miss then shut down. How do you restart it and does if fire up on all cylinders. Regards Peter

It loses power and one realises the engine isn't working ! After stopping and switching off the ignition it restarts and runs normally.
No misfiring.
Error message shows 'Engine has stalled'.

Losing power and cutting out are different. When does the stalled message come up, if it comes up before you dip the clutch then you may have a system power relay problem but I suspect the dash is no dying so the first port of call has to be the fuel pump. I assume when you restart does it immediately start and run smoothly i.e. not rich due to over fuelling. Regards Peter

The 'loss of power' was what I noticed but in fact the engine had just stopped and the car was slowing due to this.....
The message re stalling comes on while the car is still moving.
It is an automatic.

Restarting it , it runs perfectly.

Engine stalls at speed on the motorway - ..........

When you say it stalls, do you mean it stops firing? I had a car which (according to a learned electronics engineer) sometimes reacted adversely to the emissions of certain mobile phones. The car's ECU sometimes used to get it's knickers in a twist and needed a rest to get back to normal.

I did wonder about that when my lovely green Vectra did it three times in a fortnight, it was always around J12 on the M3, and I started thinking about EMC issues. Luckily (?) the relay died totally within a few days, which made fault finding a lot easier. It would seem the three occurences on the M3 did not last long enough to trigger any lasting ECU fault codes, as I did check them.

So the ECU is still running as it has detected the speed sensor but no crank sensor thus a stall message. This starting to sound like a ignition/fuel pump relay problem. Regards Peter
