Car has 126k miles on the clock. It is quite hard to put the car into 1st and 2nd gear. it does go in with a little bit of fore but sometimes pops itself back out.
Any ideas to what this could be? Is it a easy fix? Is it a clutch problem or gearbox problem?
Many thanks in advance

If you can select reverse without it crunching then the clutch is probably OK, sounds as though it could be a problem with the selector linkage.

Does it go in cleanly with the engine off. ? You do not give us much to go on. Get a good torch and look down the back of the engine to see if the sliding linkage bush has fallen out. Get someone else to select gear, engine off, so you can see the linkage movement. Regards Peter

Its a bit hit and miss with the engine off. its hard to put into gear first of all but after that i can select different gears with ease
|
Including first with ease the second time. Put it in first, start the car then with the clutch dipped quickly change to second. Has the bite pouint change recently. With the ngine off press the clutch to the floor and allow your foot to slide off the pedal, the pedal will shoot up and hopefully release the auto adjuster which I think has stucK. Regards Peter

**sorry i pressed 'quote original message' by mistake. please ignore** {sorted}
Tried to put it into 1st gear tonight without the engine on and it was very very hard to put it in there. I then went for a little drive and when i would put it into 2nd it would not 'quite catch' and pop itself out.

Have you checked the bushes and reset the auto adjuster. Regards Peter
|
Have not checked the bushes yet but just went for another drive and its just really annoying me. (1st,2nd and very occasional 3rd - 4th and 5 are fine)
Is the selector on a link rod? is this easy to change?
Also Peter D, i am doing a oil change on the car at the weekend. The car has done 126k miles. What oil shall i use (going to buy it at halfords as i have a trade card, Not bothered if its own brand or not - shall i get a thicker one to make the engine less throaty?)
Many thanks for all your help so far.

While your doing the oil change check all the linkages and bushes. You ask for advice then ignore it. Do the clutch reset. A decent 15/40 semi like magnetec on a halfords label will be fine and an OEM filter in my book. Regards Peter
|
Yes i tried the clutch reset but didnt seem to work - but perhaps i am doing it wrong.
|
Inside the car, remove the gearstick gaitor and check for wear in the linkages. You may be able to add some washers to take up the slack, but have a good magnetic pickup tool ready for when you inevitably drop the washers!

I don't know what is included in the kit as I have never had a gear selection problem, but GSF have a gearlever repair kit No.71708 and gear selector rod-side No. 71731c.
|
Yes i took off the gaiter earlier to have a look and it looks suprisingly new?? I went to the local VW garage today and bought a couple of litres of gearbox fluid that i am going to change at the weekend and have a good look around underneath at the rod etc. If all this fails then i will call up a local mobile mechanic to have a look at it and hopefully get this problem sorted.
Many thanks for all the help already guys.

SO do the gear oil change etc, but also try this:
Lift bonnet, and get a friend to waggle the gear stick around (engine off) and select a few gears. Look behind the gearbox at the mechanism and see if it goes in and out of the box straight and not squiffy. Also, over winter, excess of salt and mud can build up on the external areas of the selector mechanism. Clean off, and a good liberal spraying of WD40 can be a big help. VW say the gear oil never needs changing, but a good idea ever 50k miles (if not sooner).
IMHO 15/40 engine oil is a big agricultural. Maybe think of a 10/40 or a 5/40 fully synth (Halfords is very good).
|
Probably needs adjusting engine side then. Is it a 02A box?
|
Afternoon,
I gave the car a service today and i changed the gearbox oil. The oil that came out was very thick and it had a very bad smell to it. (like super strong coffee)
Had a fiddle with the linkages and gave them a good spray of WD40. All is seeming well at the moment but i am going to take it for a good drive now to see if the 'stiffness' has gone for good.
Many thanks to everyone who gave me advice.

If that was the original oil it should not have been thick, hypoid oil does small a bit sweet/sickly. From mory that gearbos uses Hypoid 75 or a thinner VW synthetic. What did you fill it with. Inspect the old oil carefully and look for any metal debris in the bottom. ( 1.9 lts ) Regards Peter

I went to the VW garage and got a couple of bottles of the synthetic stuff
