01 1.6 Stereo Compatibility - Sir_Basil
Hi all - I have just bought a 2001 Focus Ghia. It has the factory fitted Ford 5000 unit, which I want to upgrade to a CD player. I bought a 6006 unit, which I thought would be a direct replacement, as it is shown as an option in the Audio Guide handbook. However, although the stalk control and power plugs appear to fit, the speaker plug doesn't.

So, how can I be sure of compatibility when buying a stereo online? Did the connections alter on 6000/6006 units during the 98-04 model run? I though of using an aftermarket head unit instead (not my preference), but am concerned that I would have the same problem with a harness adapter, as they only offer one version to cover 98-04...

And help or advice would be very gratefully received....

I owned a Mk1 Focus for over 8 years and belong to some of the Focus forums as well as this one and don't recall ever reading about the problem you mention.

If the speaker-plug socket on the back of the 5000 is different to that on the 6006, then I would have thought Ford should sell an adaptor ?

A quick google search reveals a number of different adverts for the 6006 which do imply it should be a straight swap.

Eg. Ford 6006 Silver Excellent working order (Changeable with 6000 5000 4000 100)

I fitted a number of different after-market CD players to my Focus over the years and whilst they might not have looked quite as integrated in the dash as an OEM stereo, they all gave much better features and sound quality. For example, my last Alpine CD player had full iPod-compatibility (so via the dock connector, not headphone jack) and sounded far better and far more powerful than the OEM stereo.

Ford don't sell an adaptor sadly, and I'm utterly bewildered as everything I too have read suggests a straight swap! Ford can't help either...the only thing I do wonder about is that the 6006 is dated 2007, but it is the self same unit as was standard for ages, and the one listed in my audio guide booklet. I had considered an aftermarket head unit, as my other vehicles have all had MP3 units, but I'm concerned that I'll face the same problem with a harness adaptor. I have made a similar post in the Focus forum on the Ford Owners Club site, but no responses as yet....

If it was manufactured in 2007, then it would have been taken out of a Mk2 Focus.

The Mk1 and 1.5 were very similar cars but the Mk2 (2005+) was different in many ways - both inside and out - so it would be entirely possible that they might have changed the socket configuration, even though the front of the 6006 appears the same. I would have thought Ford should be able to confirm this though ?

You shouldn't have any problems with buying a harness adaptor for an after-market stereo - it sounds like it's the new stereo that's the problem, not your existing wiring. (Presuming that the previous 5000 unit in your car was fitted in a standard manner)

I bought the standard Halfords Mk1 Focus to ISO adaptor for my Alpine unit and it was plug and play.

Fascinating - EXACTLY the same issue! The pics exactly match my two stereos, and they simply are not compatible. Even when you put the power plug into the 6006, it won't light up, and won't accept the code, yet it works fine in a later ST. So I know the 6006 isn't faulty, I know my 5000 functions perfectly, and I know that the two don't interchange. So there must have been some difference in connections at some point???
