Idling speed problem - Mr Khan
I have an been having probelms with my Audi 80 1.8E manual 1990. It has covered 78,000 miles, and has been serviced every 12 months. When I start it from cold, it seems to rev at 1800 rpm. It does not come down even when fully warmed up. The only way to bring down the rpm to a reasonale level at say 1000rpm is to turn it off for about 10 minutes and then turn it back on again, and even then it will start to idle back up to the 1800 rpm again slowly. My friend has suggested that maybe the cold injector is slightly sticking. My local mechanic is lost to why it is doing this and has not come across this problem before. I would be very graeful if you could help me solve this terribly annoying problem.
RE: Idling speed problem - Roger Jones
I had chronic idling-speed and cool-running problems with my now departed Audi 100. No amount of servicing attention solved the problem, but I did by using VAG's own fuel additive, which counteracted a lot of coking up because of short-trip usage. See my posting dated 16 December and HJ's comment.
RE: Idling speed problem - Phil Parker
I seem to recall a similar problem with a 100 which was caused by an awkwardly placed and perished air pipe under the manifold. The resultant air leak led to erratic and sometimes high idle speeds, amongst other problems.
