01 1.4 3 blown head gaskets in 4 years... - SazzaUK
Hi,

I've had my MG for 5 years and knew when I bought it that MG's have a problem with their head gaskets blowing. However I have had two blow in the last four years (last one repaired Dec 2007) and today it has gone for a 3rd time (although the car is not over heating, I have white smoke coming out of the exhaust and a distinct lack of power)

Is this normal ?? I thought a head gasket, once done, would last for years!? Is it something I am doing ??

HELP!!!

when doing a head gasket on a k series engine it is vital to have the ally head skimmed and crack tested also as i am sure you are aware that new cylinder head stretch bolts are fitted also ensure the inlet manifold seals to the head are water tight change the water pump and thermostat and check the radiator honeycomb for signs good luck of corrosion only use genuine parts and be very careful when refitting the head not to damage the seal on the head gasket

Head gasket is the likley culprit but they are also prone to the inlet manifold gasket leaking on no 4 cylinder causing coolant to get sucked in creating clouds of white smoke.

As already mentioned head skim & new bolts & quality gasket & NEW CYL HEAD DOWLS are essential when carrying out HG repair.
I have repaired too many to count & never experienced a failure 2nd time around
