Hello everyone! How the devil are you all?

I know it's been quite a while but I need some advice and who better to ask than you!

The Vectra has played it's last evil trick on me so it's going. I've purposely parked it in rough areas and stopped short of leaving the keys in, in the hope that someone would have the decency to steal it - alas, it still "graces" my driveway with it's horrifically dull presence.

Anyway, in true Adam style, am I looking at "cool" cars? Noooo. Am I looking at young people's cars? Nooo! I'm looking at Volvo S80s! Well, one in particular. The car in question is a 2004 (but on a 53 plate) Volvo S80 2.4 manual and when I say it's in immaculate condition, I mean I couldn't find a mark on it anywhere. In fact, the only bad point was that is was missing the cigar lighter (I'll have to pack the Robustos in) - other than that, faultless.

I went up to see it today and, well, it's my kind of car. It's me all over in fact - big, dull, lazy and....has lots of toys. However, this has divided the household like you wouldn't believe. Dad's mate is a mechanic who has warned me off them saying when they go wrong, they go wrong (big time) and would cost me a fortune so that has instantly put Dad completely off the idea. Mum is in the "Well if you're happy, get it" camp, sister likes the silver doorhandles (don't ask), girlfriend says to get it (but hates mine almost as much as me) and my uncle tells me I'm a grown man so I should shut the hell up and buy the damn thing. (He didn't say "hell" but you get the idea)

So, my dilemma is what to do. I've weighed up each option (get it or don't get it) and I just don't know what to do. I get the feeling that I would regret not getting it but that isn't necessarily the best reason to buy a car is it?

Is this mechanic right? Would the car bankrupt me? I've scoured the Net and can't find anything that afflicts the 2.4s that would cost too much - I know suspension is a bit of a dodgy issue but it's all cheap stuff from what I've been told. On the test drive there were no knocks and it pulled nice and clean. It's had two previous owners, has done the right side of 60k miles and will be serviced, taxed and MOT's if I buy it. Somehow, the guy will take my car as part ex and so, the Volvo will cost me 1600 quid (plus my car, which, spookily enough, has done the exact same miles as the Volvo).

So BR, over to you. Ignoring the "what the Hell are you playing at buying a Volvo S80?" argument, I like stupid big cars like this. I like being weird. And I like buttons that fold the wing mirrors in. But I don't want to go out and buy a car that a month down the line will cost thousands to fix.

I'm going to sleep on it and then go to look at it again tomorrow morning when I'll make my decision. Your comments, as always, would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Private or Trade? Warranty or As-seen?

Kevin...

They share a lot with the S60 & V70 and they're not known for troubles. The early 98-02 models had a few issues but by 2004 they were very well sorted cars.

The 2.4 engine is in every Volvo from a S40 to a S80 and is a well proven unit.

As a big, cheap, luxo barge they have a lot to recommend them.

Thanks for the replies gents.

I remembered EVERYTHING but to ask about the warranty Kevin! I can ask tomorrow though - it's from a small dealership. If it is "sold as seen" then do I have any legal recourse should something big go wrong? Or is it a bit of a gamble?

I was thinking the petrol non-turbo variety would be one of the most reliable units but this comment from the mechanic worried me! If I bought it and then a week later it cost me a fortune to fix,

Oh PU, it's been a while!

I might be young and impetulent and stupid, but there's one thing I'm not, and that's stupid!

Of course I checked there! Doesn't hurt to get lots of opinions though! The CBCB didn't tell me my current car would be a pile of crap! And it said hurtful things about Focus saloons too.

So you say you're young and stupid but one thing you're not is ... stupid ;-)

Hope someone can advise on the car help you need. Not sure how much the Vectra's worth (why did you go for a Vectra???) but it sounds a cheap deal. So either a good deal or something to be wary of if I was in your shoes.

PU's advice was spot on for the Car-by-Car-Breakdown.

>>The CBCB didn't tell me my current car would be a pile of crap!

I thought Jeremy Clarkson covered that one off ;-) HJ even references JC and says he would not recommend and lists lots of problems.

I had as company cars (briefly) a Vectra 1.8LS and 2.0GLS. They were okay I suppose. Only swapped to the 2.0 because the 1.8 was poor for traction on some wet/greasy roundabouts with only 115PS! So traction control made a difference on the 136PS 2.0. The Vectra was never good at traction.

Ironically the newer 2.0 was due to be replaced before the 1.8 so a wise move. They got rid of it early due to a change in lease companies.

Not sure about previous models but the current V70 shares a lot with the S80. The S60 (soon to be discontinued until replaced in 2010) shares the Mondeo/S-Max/Galaxy chassis.

But Adam's after an older car. So maybe the old S60/80 and V70 were related.

The 00-07 V70, 00-09 S60 & 98-06 S80 all share a fair bit but have no Ford influence at all. They were all developed long before Ford got involved.

The 06-on S80 is indeed basically a saloon version of the 07-on V70.

Hi Adam,

I've very nearly racked up 100,000 miles in my 1999 2.4SE (170) auto S80, and would wholeheartedly recommend it as an alternative to the more usual German suspects.

Not sure about the manual box, though - the 5-speed auto suits the car well, and shifts faultlessly. Best fuel economy was about 43mpg on a gentle M-way run.

It's no ball of flame, more of a 'wafting' car - though the low-speed ride lacks the suppleness which my old XJ40 possessed. High-speed stability is excellent.

Other than brake pads and discs, the only thing I've had to replace has been a thermostat. I used to get it serviced when it was younger, but now DIY it (it's pretty easy to work on if you're that way inclined).

The biggest bugbear, by far, is the 'generous' turning circle - even with the skinniest standard tyres (215/55R16) it is embarrassingly large for some car parks :-(

However, I have to say it has been one of the most satisfying cars I've owned, but not the most charismatic.....

I'd go for it!

Second that. I'm in a 121k 1999 2.4SE (140) that has caused me very little trouble, and has been great. Very comfortable seats, plenty of space, and relaxed cruising at anything up to 90mph+.
It's quite thirsty round town when cold, but 34ish on a run is not that bad, even given a heavy right foot. For £1600, it's almost free.

Both my father and father-in-law ran the 2.8 petrol versions of the S80 for a couple of years and although they now drive a Jag XJ and Volvo V50 diesel respectively, both have very fond memories of the S80.

I don't think either of them had anything other than routine maintenance and were fantastic motorway cruisers and very comfortable. They would certainly recommend it.
I'm THIS close to buying one - TheOilBurner
Hi Adam,

I've had my 2005 S80 D5 for just over a year and a half now. It's been faultlessly reliable, incredibly comfortable and has sunk in value like a lead balloon!

Just make sure that you're not paying over the odds for it, if so then you can't go too far wrong. I used to have a V70 with the 2.4 engine and it was very sweet, but make sure it's the 170bhp version. The detuned 140bhp 2.4 can have trouble maintaining momentum uphill without changing down a gear or two.

You can get the 140 tuned to 180bhp, but the insurance hassle may put you off. Plus you're looking at about £400 to chip the engine. Apart from the tuning, the 140 and 170 bhp 2.4 engines are physically identical, it's nothing more than a software map that separates them from the factory.

For the record the 98-06 S80, 00-07 V70/XC70 and 00-09 S60 are all built on the same platform. The differences between an S80 and S60 are basically that the S60 is shorter and narrower, and not a lot else. It's also easier to find a fully loaded S80, as S60s were common fleet fare.

However, there is a little Ford influence on 2004- facelift S60/V70/S80s, but much less on the S80 as it was due to be replaced in 2006 anyway, and so was molested less by Ford bean counters! If yours is a 53 reg, then it'll be pre-facelift. You can tell by looking at the plastic inserts on the body, body coloured ones are post-facelift.

The XC90 is also built from the same platform as the S80, but uses a different electrical system.

The new V70/XC70 and S80 are all on the Mondeo/S Max/Freelander platform as said above.

As for repairs, yes they can go wrong, sometimes expensively so. However, the things that tended to go wrong on the earlier cars such as door locks, dash display and ETMs are all fixed after 2002 or so. The very early S80 T6s were a nightmare and best avoided, the 2.4 no problem at all after 2002 when the ETM make was changed. Avoid D5s from before 2004 unless you have proof that injectors have already been replaced...

There are only two problems I can think of on S80s that have no real fix: the suspension can be a little noisy at low speeds and the headlights have a tendency to mist up. Other than that, avoid main dealers if you can, Volvo dealers charge harder than any Rhino!

And yes, the turning circle is rubbish. Given the width and length of the thing too, parking it can be a right pain sometimes, but I forgive mine everything for its wonderful seats!

p.s. cambelt change is due around every 96k maximum...

It does seem a bit of a bargain and would almost certainly be a pleasing place to sit. I quite fancy a V70 with that engine but would be a bit nervous about the mpg with my high mileage. Having said that, as a recent returner to petrol after 13 years of diesels I am enjoying the upsides of reasonably powerful petrol ownership very very very much. Parp parp........

;-)

You should probably buy it in other words.
I'm THIS close to buying one - TheOilBurner
Humph, in my experience, a V70 2.4 manual does about 23mpg around town, but on motorway runs it's possible to get about 33mpg at legal motorway speeds.

FocusDriver: The turning circle is poor, but reverse parking is no problem, providing you can find a space long enough.

The real problem with the turning circle is trying to pull forwards into spaces or turning around in road entrances, it just means you might need to reverse back a bit and have another go. That's only when it's a bit tight, otherwise there's no major problem.
Very tight car parks and twisty multi-story car parks require a little more precision and care than normal...

To non-Volvo owners you look like someone who can't park properly, but any S60/V70/S80 owner will look on and nod sympathetically! :)

I've had a 2002 S80 2.4 manual for over 4 years now. I've done 60k miles bringing the total to 80k. I'd agree with the comments of the other owners particularly regarding noise from the suspension, although no suspension repairs have been required. The only non-service item has been the clutch on the end of the alternator.

The manual is probably a lot more economical than the auto, mine averages about 32mpg. It is a BIG car, not good on little lanes or congested areas.
I'm THIS close to buying one - FocusDriver
Can I ask a question? If the S80's turning circle is poor, then would this mean that reverse parking into an average space (big anough for an S80 plus a few feet either end) would be impossible then? I'm intrigued as to just how prohibitive its turning circle is.

(Going out now so won't be able to respond till later. )

Hello Adam. :-)
My pal here has a 2002 S80 with the 2.5 (I think) diesel and manual gearbox. It has average mileage and has given him no trouble at all. Still looks quite nice too, if you like big saloons. From my experience it's comfortable, adequately roomy, quiet and great for long journeys.
£1600 sounds pretty good to me. Last week Rene went into a couple of local Renault dealers, who offered him 3.5k or 5k euros (pretty much the same as pounds these days) to turn it in for a new Laguna estate.
Good luck...

Hello everyone!

I went to see it again this morning with a friend and checked these replies on my phone which pretty much influenced my decision.

I am now the proud owner of the said Volvo - Dad thinks I'm absolutely crazy, my friend also thinks I'm crazy but liked the seats (they are comfy!) but I'm happy! It's silver with seemingly no scratches or blemishes whatsoever. The warranty is three months parts and labour and they're going to service, MOT and tax it for me next week.

I was told it was a 170 but I remember seeing a while ago that there's a sequence of numbers and letters on the cambelt cover that denoted if it was 170 or 140bhp. Apparently if it ends in S2 it's a 140 and if it ends in S it's a 170 - I've no idea whether that's true or not but this ended in an S.

Being the expert driver that I am (yeah right!) parking shouldn't be an issue....although we'll see when I next have to go to the Trafford Centre!

I'm actually happy. I know that things will go wrong with it. And I know that it might cost a bit but when you like the car, you can be very forgiving. I'd rather have something a bit different and be happy than something normal and boring. I should point out that it's not costing me 1600 quid; it's 1600 quid PLUS my car but to be honest, I've come away from the deal feeling happy about it all.

Once again, thank you to everyone that posted - I'd like to thank you all by name but so many of you kindly replied! Virtual pints to you all!

I'm jetting off to New York tomorrow morning so I'm picking it up the week after next - I'll keep you updated of course - if anyone is interested, I might even take a few pics for you all (if an S80 excites you that is!).

Must go and pack now!

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Congrats!

You are correct, the 170bhp is engine designation B5422S. The S2 is the 140.

That's very lucky, as the vast majority of 2.4s were 140s, because they were cheaper to buy!

I hope (and I'm fairly sure!) that you'll love it. Don't forget there is the excellent owners club if you feel like dropping by, there's lots of cracking (free) advice over there too.

Hello everyone!

Firstly, let me apologise for getting back to you so late. I've been back a few days but I've been a bit busy. I did manage to find some time to pick the new car up though! I've got to say, I love it!

I've driven about 200 miles in it and here's what I've found so far:

1. It's BIG. I think I can say goodbye to parking on the drive. I did manage to park it at Asda but it was about half eleven and there were 6 cars on the car park so no real test. I'm nipping to the Trafford Centre later though so I'll let you know if/when I hit something.

2. It's nowhere near as wallowy as I thought it would. Even though I'd test driven it, I was reading reviews that were making out I've have to submit a request (in triplicate) to go around a corner so when I was driving it back, I was slowing down quite a lot for even small bends but I didn't need to - it's actually very competent and especially when you factor in how big it is. I was overtaking people and fishtailing away from roundabouts in no time at all! ;)

3. The power is nice to have. Don't get me wrong - it's not tyre shredding, laughing at people when you burn away from the lights power, but not having to change gear all the time power. I think people in them there motoring circles call it torque or something. Whatever it is, it's nice.

4. The seats are supremely comfortable. I'll make a bold statement now, but I don't think I've ever felt as comfy driving a car. The only seats that come close are that of an S-Type Jag which were like armchairs - but the seat backs were quite short and given I'm quite tall, I couldn't really sit back in them. These are like they were made for me!

5. I don't know if this says more about the radio in the Vectra that preceeded it, but the radio in this sounds fantastic! I was bopping away to Jeff Lynne and his mates and it sounded like they were in the car with me!

6. I haven't been laughed at anywhere near as much as I thought I would. (They're doing it behind my back) I think the silver helps. Let's be honest, it's the most "normal" coloured car I've had really isn't it?

5. I look rather dashing in tweed.

All in all, I'm impressed - I hope that isn't the novelty of a new car though (some of it probably is!). One thing I have noticed though, when I was turning around yesterday, I saw the reflection of the brake lights and it looked like they were LEDs. Would this be right? If so, I'm guessing it'd need to go to Volvo if something ever went wrong with them (i.e. not a Halfords jobby?).

It's got a year's MOT on, the tyres are good for a year (good set of tyres on there actually) and it's serviced so hopefully any cost will be little things. I've been told the suspension could do with looking at around 60k miles but I don't know what that entails. I thought I heard a knock when I went over a bump last night but I never heard it again. Probably imagining it!

Anyway, enough of me rambling on. I just thought I'd report back. Thanks to everyone for your help. Without your comments, I probably wouldn't have bought it! (I'm coming back to you lot if it all goes wrong though! ;))

Oh yeah, one other thing, Crown Victorias are AWESOME!

Thanks again for your help. It was and is, as always, greatly appreciated.

Hi Adam,

Glad you're enjoying it! :)

I'd second your comments, I was surprised how good they are round corners. No sportscar, but far better than you might imagine.

Seats are wonderful no doubt about it, and Volvo stereos are some of the best you'll find fitted as standard equipment.

Low speed suspension noise is normal. Mine does it and always has. Just been through it's second MOT and no problems at all, suspension or otherwise.

You might need the bushes and engine mounts looked at, but probably not till 80-90k, and it's not too pricey if you avoid main dealers.

Rear brake lights are LEDs (yours must be the facelift car, pre-facelift didn't have them) and they should last the lifetime of the car. No problems with mine, yet - touch wood! If there was an issue, then it's not a matter of popping to Halfords, as you say. Don't worry about it...

People sneered when I told them I'd bought an S80. But that soon changed to admiration once they sat in it, felt and saw the quality and the raw shove of the engine. Plus that 5 pot just sounds great when revved hard!

Enjoy, and if you do have issues, get yourself over to the owners club forums, some very good info on there.

Hi Adam,

Welcome to the Volvo fold! :-)

Had my S60 a year now, and am delighted with it. One of the easiest to live with, and most satisfying cars I have ever had the pleasure to own or have custody of. Performance, seats, driving position, comfort, refinement, equipment levels and build quality are all genuinely superb. Low speed ride, rear visibility and turning circle are rubbish. Handling somewhere in the middle. A very good all-rounder though.

Mine has the odd rumble and faint knock from underneath at slow speeds over sharp bumps, but neither the MOT or the service (both done by the same guy) can find any trace of a problem. "Live with it" is what he said, so I do. It's not horrendous anyway.

Since I've owned this car, a friend has bought one, and my brother in law is looking for one. Nothing like being a trend-setter!

Oh, and 141,000 miles and 7.5 yrs old, and its still on its original exhaust and battery!

Cheers

Hello everyone!

Day 6 and the novelty still hasn't worn off. I can't tell you how happy I am getting in a car that I actually like every morning!

I had to drive down to Stoke in it yesterday but there had been a few crashes on the M6 so I opted for the back roads through Northwich and Winsford and without wanting to sound like a broken record, it really is fine - not needing to change gear as much helps to make the drive quite relaxed. Although it definitely comes into it's own on the motorway.

Mr OilBurner - I'm glad you said that about the lights....I was a little worried about a huge impending cost! It was my first day back at work yesterday and I've had my first real test of it's maneuverability - what would ordinarily have been a single U-Turn took....a bit longer (much to the amusment of my colleagues) but I managed it! My excuse is that it's a very small carpark! Speaking of which, it overhangs both the front and back of the parking space! But I don't care - I still love it!

With it being a new car (to me), I've been taking it super easy so not really revving it over 3,000 although on the way to work this morning I went for it a bit and I know what you mean about the noise! A nice change from a 1.8 Vectra!

DP! Long time no speak! I know what you mean about a trend setter - Dad asked me if I wanted to swap cars with him yesterday...in the past, I'd been begging him to swap! He actually commented yesterday on something I'd been unconsciously doing (and doubtless many other people do too) - when you're looking at a new car, Volvos seem to slip under the radar and few people seem to consider them - but when people have sat inside mine and been in it, they've all mentioned how nice a car it is - I've even got my best mate considering an S60!

Espada! I forgot about your S80! How are you by the way? It's been a while since we last met/spoke!

Before I forget, MR OB, is the Volvo Owners Club www.volvoclub.org.uk? And are you still an Oil Burner on that?

I must dash anyway - even though I don't like working on a Saturday, I suppose I'd be show willing!

Thanks for the continued advice!

Adam

That's the one, it's my other favourite haunt...

It's a veritable gold mine of Volvo information over there, you can find loads of info on just about any aspect of S80 ownership. Remember that the S60 (00-09) and V70 (00-07) are basically the same cars, and the XC90 is similar too. So lots of the advice there also applies to the S80.

Parking can be "fun", only the other day I was stuck in a space due to someone parking right behind me. I must have done about 15 forward-back shuffles (trying to avoid wall near the front wing too!) but I made it. Entertained the old lady watching me too! :)

I get very itchy feet and usually change my car after 9 months or so. So far with the S80 I've gone 16 months.... I keep wanting to change it (as is my way), but every time I look for a replacement, I can't find anything which ticks all the same boxes, so I just end up holding onto it instead...

Now I see why, on average, Volvo owners tend to keep their cars a long time, once you've had one, it's hard to go back...and they just last and last...

And Mike, dreadfully sorry about that - I know you're a nice guy and you'd let me in though! ;)

Adamski, it's about time you updated your profile. You can't still be 20, surely?

Well, so far so good - everything A-OK with the car and I'm still enjoying it. Turns out it does fit on the drive (just). I checked the oil yesterday (I've done about 1500 miles since getting it) and it was dead on max; quite a novelty coming from the Vectra!

Only thing is, one of the nearly new Michelins on the front got destroyed this morning so I'm having to drive around on a spacesaver until my tyre gets ordered in. Can't blame the car for that though!

And Snaily, I can't update it - it reminds me of the old day!

How did you get it for this money? How much was the Vectra worth? AND where did you get it AND do they have another one??

VBR.......Martin.
