Ridiculous news items - Statistical outlier
Is it me, or are the news items getting sillier?

Mazdas are 'perfect as company cars'. That's fair enough, the 6 is a lolvely looking car, and it's probably great as long as it's not you paying for frequent oil changes because the diesel particulate filter fills the sump with diesel.

But we are then told that this diesel estate car costs half what a large, heavy, thirsty 4x4 does per mile, while not mentioning that it is completely unable to tow the same weight, go offroad, or do anything much that would make the comparison more relevant. WHY??

in other shock news, the Mazda MX5 has less carrying capacity than an 80,000 tonne cargo ship, but is considerably easier to park on your drive. Readers may want to consider a new MX5 if a quick blast down some country lanes is more their cup of tea than international container shipping.

Honestly, who writes this drivel, and why do they insult our intelligence by publishing it??

The article starts:

"Company car drivers looking to update their current vehicle have been urged to consider something from Mazda.

The manufacturer claimed its models are the perfect choice for businesspeople covering long distances each year because of their impressive fuel economy."

Seems perfectly sensible. Most[1] company car drivers don't cover long distances off-road, or tow huge weights, AFAIK.

[1] Probably the vast majority of.

Indeed, so most are as likely to chose a Land Rover as they are a supertanker. Why not contrast how much better it is than a Mondeo, for example?

Colleague in recent months swapped a Freelander for a Mondeo - new company car. He did not need the Freelander and was complaining about mpg....

i have to say that i have seen plenty of drivers (mainly women, sorry its the truth) trying to parallel park a small car like it was a container ship only by the time they get their mini parked up a cargo ship would have moored, off loaded and be half way back to dubai to pick up its next load !!! so in some cases the container ship analygy might not be far off the mark :-)

It's the articles with statistics in that get to me, like "Half of the children tested were below average." (!!)

Another favourite was "Drinking is a major cause of small babies." Think about it.

Simply, they have done all the sensible messages to death already, and people don't take any notice of those, so may as well try something daft for a change.

Here's a good one from the BBC a few years ago to get back on topic;
"The Severn Bridge has reopened after being closed for 3 days due to high winds, much to the relief of drivers who have had to make the detour via............"
Ermm, did they mean "To the relief of drivers who DON'T have to make the detour.....) ?

No, they said it right ~ " .......... to the relief of drivers who have had to make the detour via............" whilst the bridge was closed.
