I sympathise with you -- we picked up SWMBO Mazda 2 and drove home - suddenly Bang - truck coming other way threw up a stone and it hit windscreen just two inch's from top -25 miles on clock - had Autoglass out and he confirmed a star crack - said it was too close to roof to get his tool on and said if I was you leave it till it cracked and we could see it (it's on black surround bit) - I wouldn't have screen changed yet on car 24hrs old - it has rain and light sensors on screen as well - now one month old and also has chip on passenger door.
One thing I have noticed is how soft this water based paint is these days -

A former work colleague ran up the back of a van after 2/3rds mile in his brand new car.
A short skirt and shapely legs caught his attention momentarily.

Can't knock him for that, pity with practice its possible to pilot quite well on peripheral vision...
So i'm told..;)
I agree with the comment on just how soft, and thin paintwork has become, and i find modern cars dent so easily too.

It happens. To me, nearly always. Then I can relax, knowing a rite of passages has been passed. I seldom have any dings afterwards.

A friend of mine collided with another car before he'd even left the dealer's premises with his brand new car! The salesman said it wasn't the first time he'd known it happen.

Many years ago, a mate was driving his brand new Reliant home. He lost it on a downhill stretch and wrapped it round some street furniture. The bodywork was in pieces, but the car was intact.
He put all the bits of body back together with lots more fibreglass and painted it with a brush!
The tattiest looking newest Reliant you've ever seen.

Commiserations, retgwte :(
The idea of the DeLorean's stainless steel bodywork always appealed, though many owners have apparently painted theirs now; perhaps it's impractical in the real world for some reason?
|
There is a patent from a compant called Kansei Paint which covers the use of laminated car body panels which, after watching a programme about the Airbus A380 last night, would seem an ideal way to go.
First off, a laminate of GRP and aluminium is stronger than a single sheet of aluminium of the same size. It is also lighter, so the car would weight less, thus improving effeciancy. Finally, if the paint/pigment is dispersed within the GRP layer, a scratch wouldn't show any primer as the GRP layer would be thick enough to cope with surface scratches. It would also resist stone chips better.

Re the Delorean I thing think the problem is that, despite the nomenclature, the is not stainless but stains less! It was not surgical grade I guess

Ah so it actually rusted/corroded? Seem to remember reading something about that wrt exhausts here in the past. Stainless can rust where it's welded too, though I don't know whether that applies to the DL. It doesn't like salt either, does it; you sometimes see white corrosion in the bottom of 18/8 saucepans after boiling things in brine...

The problem with the De Lorean was that the bodywork looked wonderful until you got fingerprints on it, which couldn't be removed

Tip of the Day !
To clean stainless steel, for example your kitchen appliances, apply some Johnsons baby oil with a clean soft cloth. Marvelous.

Will that remove limescale from stainless steel sinks?

My theory is that the main downside of changing a car is that things - usually some sort of damage - happen to it almost straight away.
Changed car on Dec.18th. Drove 30 miles home, next day rear tyre looked low, found screw in tread and got fixed. Two weeks later same thing in other rear tyre. End of January, some evil scrote chose to sideswipe car for fun when SWMBO was driving, fortunately only left one small dent. With great presence of mind she got his number and Plod gave him a reprimand (allegedly).
Within a month of getting the previous car, the occupant of one parked next to it opened a door with vigour, and after examining the dent it caused said 'Oh, that's not much' and blamed their dog.
So things should settle down after a short while ...

do the easily replaceable panels on the smart cars work? are the panels cheap enough to make it work?
really i think we should introduce the death penalty for folk scratching cars, this liberal democracy stuff doesnt seem to be working... all the good cards are held by the evil scum in the deck as dealt by NuLabour
you know in Chicago folk found nicking car stereos get shot at by the residents, and im sure they would be equally unhappy with folk scratching their cars, we need to even the odds a little along those lines, consequently not much car stereo theft in Chicago :)
i really dont think a few scared kids in PCSO uniforms is doing much to help, rather than reassure the community they just make me more and more inclined to make a few citizens arrests with minimal force

There's a word for that. It rhymes with complete kisser.

Few years ago wifey's new Clio was delivered to us a couple of days before 1st August. In messing around with the carpet mats I bumped the door with my shoulder and it literally touched the corner of a wall. But that was enough to sort of crunch the surface of the lovely metallic blue paintwork.
Mrs BP wasn't very happy.

The Chicago method sounds good to me. I believe in South Africa, some owners used to leave a half empty bottle of brandy laced with cyanide in the glove box as a treat for car thieves. I suppose you could use a massive dose of laxatives over here !

Did you do it, or was it done deliberately by someone who was jealous that you had got a brand new car?
