Been battering the old keyboard for a few days as I seek insurance quotes for 3 vehicles shared between 2 self employed common law partners. Googled several of the companies now supposedly offering ' fleet ' or ' family insurance insurance as opposed to having 3 separate vehicle policies.
Every one of them has worked out more expensive than 3 separate lots of insurance.
Any suggestions ?

I've never pursued this line when insuring up to 4 cars at our home but I'm not surprised that it costs more than obtaining individual quotes for each car.
I feel that these insurers are offering nothing more than a discount for multiple insurance rather than a true "fleet" policy.
I know it's a pain but I would continue to trawl the internet for each individual car's insurance.

Just with the recent crop of TV adverts, I thought I might have found the answer to my yearly problem. Had policies spread all over the place but actually managed to get them all with one insurer one year but this year they are not as competitive.

The problem is that insurance companies see multi car policies, shared by more than one driver as a bigger risk. I suppose they have done some risk analsys to back it up but who knows.

Have you tried a more trad broker? When I was insuring our au pair I went through the online comparison sites and they just couldn't cope with slightly non-standard needs. Not expecting much I called Swinton and they listened, got what I was after and came back with a better price which I was able to go through in detail over the phone to make sure we had all the nuances sorted.

No connection with them other than as a happy customer.

I've got two cars insured via the Post Office, which offered £50 cashback on each policy and various useful extras. Although they are both with the PO they are actually with different insurance companies.
Very much cheaper than the Multi-car policy with Admiral on the same cars/drivers - although I did use Admiral when I had a young male as a named driver on one car!

Trad broker. Thats an idea. Haven't used one of those in years. They seemed to fall out of favour once the net took off.

"Trad broker"

Traditional brokers can still save money by coming up with a policy that suits you. For my eldest stepson I saved loads doing this for him. A broker dealing with younger drivers was a lot cheaper than many websites.

Put off by the fact that they are not a big name before but will have another look at them.

Had a few replies back from some companies that do the family fleet thing but all stillworking out more expensive. Still waiting to here from the HJ one as linked to this site... only been 4 days so clearly they are not suffering from lack of work in the credit crunch.
Whilst looking at individual car insurances, Liverpool Victoria came in on one of them ( shmbo BMW ) around £200 cheaper than just about any one else ! Any one with them or can give a reason why they would seem to be so much cheaper ?

LV (frizzells) seem to plough their own field indeed.

When we put a third (group 18) vehicle on the road with zero no claims they knocked spots off everyone else, almost halving most quotes.

Have you asked NFU, they do their own thing too and you will be able to speak with a local office.
Not the cheapest though usually competitive, but very old fashioned and straight dealing.

The LV website offers you a choice of how many years No Claims you have, ie over 4, over 5 up to over 9 years. Now my self and my partner have had a claim in over 20 years each.
We can prove 5 years each because we have been with our present insurer that long and it states it on their renewals but how do we prove over 9 years when we have had a series of different insurers, some of whom I can't even remember now. I thought the industry as a whole had all this info on computer ?
