Try giving the belts and the runners an application of silicone / silicon spray - available from Halfords and the like. Alternately a light spraying of furniture polish can also work.

If you use silicone / silicon spray (as opposed to silicone / silicon grease, or the stuff you use on dashboards) then it won't leave behind any sticky residue. If using furniture polish, then rub the belts over with a tissue or cloth afterwards to remove any excess polish.
