97 1.4 Rocker assembly not fitting properly - Foxy0-0
Hi all, just had my head machined and fitted new gasket and fitted head onto location dowells. The Haynes then says refit the rocker assembly to head. There are small locating dowells in each pedestal. The end ones fit ok but the remainder are NOT sitting flat with the cylinder head. and refuse to sit down flat by approx.y 0.5mm. I've tried backing off the valve adjustor screws but this does not help.
Any advice graatefully received.
Thanks,

Hi. What did you have done to your head?

The cam could be trying to open some valves?

You'd find it difficult to get an engine position with all the valves closed.

Thanks for the reply. I've undone the locking nuts and backed off the threaded screws on rocker assembly.
I've removed the dowells from the pedestal bases and tried them in the cylinderhead holes. The end ones ie those on Nos. 1 and 4 cylinders are a tight fit and coincidentally these are the two pedestals that sit flat. The one in the centre and ones either side of this are pretty loose and look to have worn the aluminium. I've put the dowells back into the rocker assembly and located back on the head. The gap between pedestal bases and head is now down to 0.2mm on the centre pedestal and about 0.12 on pedestals either side.

As pointed out earlier there could still be some contact but I think the gap maybe due to warp on top of head. I tried a straight edge and feelers and there was a slight bow.
I also tried the cam before I fitted it onto engine and it seemed pretty free with no binding.

Does anyone thinl I'm splitting hairs here and should I just torque the head down and hope the rocker assembly pulls flat to the head?
Thanks

Hi,

I had the head pressure tested and skimmed. The machinist said he only removed about 0.15mm, so a minimum sort of clean up. The reason for this was a blown head gasket, I've included pics of head in a previous post.

I guess the machinist knew what he was doing when he skimmed the head. I suppose you've got two alternatives: either take the head off again and get the bits where the pedestals go skimmed straight (if that's possible) or, if they're flat, carefully torque it down and hope for the best.

Maybe you should dismantle it and check the shaft's straight too.

Hi Steve,

That's exactly what I thought, maybe the shaft on the assem.y is bowed.
I could gently torque it down because you start with the centre bolts anyway.
And once timing belt is tensioned I could remove spark plugs and see if there is much resistance, by turning engine over.

I've seen mechanics break rockers, rocker pedestals and bend valves by trying to assemble everything while the pistons are at TDC. Where possible, I tend to make sure they're all part way down the cylinders before I put the head back on, failing that, I back off the adjusters (if present) as far as possible, to give the most clearance.

Good advice number cruncher, I'll double check that I've backed off ALL the adjustors
before I torque up head bolts through the Rocker Assembly!
