When did you last have the spheres replaced and the suspension fluid replaced and bled? Not sure on your model but there can be seven of the things built into the car and they do wear with age.

Referring back to an old article I read a good while back on ths matter, the first recommendation is to take a sample of the suspension fluid into a clear test tube and hold against a newspaper, you should be able to read the paper through the fluid.

One other thing, the spheres are not easy to obtain but recon units are available, do a google search. I suggest you take it to a Citroen specialist to do this work as it can be difficult or worse.

Also found this link which may enlighten you better.

Interesting to note that some searches reveal that sphere and LMH fluid changes should be done every 3 years/50000 miles.

A knocking noise is unlikely to be the spheres - when they fail the ride goes hard. The track rod ends tend to make a soft knocking noise when they go,and they can be difficult to find as the play goes out of them in high suspension or when jacked up - check for play 3 - 6 o'clock with the wheels on the ground. Bottom ball joints and wishbone bushes can also be sources of noise. It is possible that the strut tops might be rusting out, which might make a knocking noise - check to see that the strut gaiter is still attached at the top and the bottom of the strut top is not misshapen.
