£50,000 of taxpayers money to give free driving lessons to asylum seekers. On our overcrowded roads?

Discuss.

Presumably the Government's line of thinking is:

1. If these people are going to stay in Britain, we would be happier if they had jobs rather than living on benefits. (Fair enough)

2. It will be much easier for them to get jobs if they can drive, since they won't be restricted to jobs in places that can be reached by public transport.

In other words, HMG is spending £50,000 to acknowledge that public transport is not the solution to all our problems, that cars are a necessity not a luxury, and that cars make an important contribution to keeping our economy up and running. Otherwise, they would spend the £50,000 on free bus passes.

Gotcha!

Oh my god,how many more taxi drivers do we want.If the ones round here are anything to go by,that means more running through red lights, stop anywhere convenient to them, speed limits ?what speed limits, and yes I am serious.

Oh and yes,my daughter has just applied for a license and in the course of learning to drive she/we will probably have to stump up many hundreds of pounds.I am sure she would like them for free !

I no it's not PC to say this but this island is getting crowded and cannot cope now. It's time to get tough with immigration, legal or otherwise.

Believe me this is just the tip of a considerable iceberg. I read that there are 250,000 immigrants coming here every year, that's right the equivalent of a town the size of Cambridge every year !! The majority are bogus asylum seekers all of whom will be fed, housed, clothed, educated, given access to free medical care and legally assisted to fight our asylum system for years !! Even after years of this when they are found inelligible for asylum they just disappear into the black economy - a tiny fraction are actually deported. The true cost is £billions !!! and it's not a cost that's going to be a one off either !! It really comes to something when your own government puts the needs of economic migrants (nearly all o whom are in breach of the asylum laws) before its own people. Perhaps thats because it's not their jobs, schools, hospitals, GP surgeries, residential areas that bear the brunt of all this. The day one of these MP's agrees to house and support a family of asylum seekers at his/her expense is the day I'll eat my hat !
What next ? I expect they'll be given free cars and petrol vouchers too !!

Andy,
The weekend is coming up - think positive!
When all these new drivers get as pink fluffy diced off as we are with the state of our roads and the proliferation of speed cameras, they will start to write to The Daily Telegraph.
At some future election, we will see the end of Tony B Liar, as they will all be voting for wossisname?

Government have just released 'statistics' showing that immigration figures were less last year than for the year before.

My personal take on it is that the only immigration figures that are down are the legal ones, god only knows how many people are getting in the back-door. I work in an area where continental lorries unload and if I don't see or hear about another load of immigrants on a weekly basis it's unusual.
We had a load dropped off a couple of months back who promptly ordered breakfast from the burger wagon in our car park - after a bit of negotiation over the euro/pound rate every one was happy. They then called their friends on their mobile phones and within an hour all had disappeared.

Plod arrived at lunchtime and didn't even get his pen out.

As regards getting a free car - I personally know one that did get a free car to take her son to school because the taxis were unreliable and expensive!

I personally know many "foreigners" who settled in this country over the past 30 years. Almost every one of them wishes that the "British" people would stop being so "pc" and speak out against further immigration and asylym seekers settling here. Why? Because they know that the new immigrants are causing them harm and they know that most of the applicants are bogus!

I tell this tale at every chance I get in the hope that the message will get through to the politicians before it is too late.

Since these immigrants inevitably end up in London, there will be more congestion. Any visitor to London will confirm that we can do without these additional drivers.

Andy,
Are any of the "foreigners" you mention members of the institutions which have been formed in the past 30 years which could cause the "British" people being arrested for expressing similar opinions to those which you mention?

Just a thought...

It's not just asylum seekers who get free driving lessons. On a number of occasions over the years I have been paid by the Jobcentre to provide lessons to unemployed youngsters in the hope of giving them a skill which will enable them to find a job. Almost without exception these clients have proved to be a complete waste of time, failing to turn up for lessons and being too lazy to even bother studying for the theory test. It's no skin off my nose, I get paid anyway and I operate a strict policy of no refunds if the client gives up, which is often the case.

When I compare that to the hundreds of pounds most people spend learning to drive, and the effort they put in it re-enforces my belief that the more you do for some people the less they value it. What you work for you appreciate, what you get for free you take for granted.

Ah well, it's only taxpayers money, so I suppose the government can afford to be generous with it.

re free driving lessons,,,,, please could you tell me how to gat my local jobcentre to pay for my driving lessons?,

im 23 yrs old and have 3 children and im on jsa and have no way to afford 20 pounds an hour to pay for it myself, what realy gets on my nerves is asylum seekers get everything, fed ,clothed, housed, lessons and even get cars bought for them, what sort of a country is this when a young brit family are forced to live on bennefits? and asylum seekers get everything they ask for, its not on.so if anyone has any details for me i would be gratefull of a reply,, thanks

The lessons are not limited to asylum seekers, you should ask through learn direct... I am british, white, 31 and the only requirement is that you have a provisional license and you will have to complete some computer courses... nobody gets it for nothing they have to study for it.

Even if you have a job (like i have) you are eligible though you have to pay 20 pounds one off registration.

I think it is too easy to not get the whole picture if you are dead set on attacking random groups of people out of envy or jealousy.

I am very grateful for the support i am getting to learn to drive as a result of the new initiative to make sure that people who live in britain regardless of their background can learn to drive safely.

Good luck with your lessons!!

It's like the saying goes: "Give a man a fish and he can feed himself for a day, teach him to drive and he can nip down to McDonalds for a fillet 'o fish every night.

Mark and all moderators,
I don't see why this site can't entertain threads that aren't car related. Note that this thread has veered off despite your earlier 'reminder' of what we're here for because people want to talk about it!
Given that old threads are deleted after a week of inactivity allowing a broader discussion base would only help this site not hinder it.

Dan,

I think this thread has stuck quite well to the motoring theme, even if it has some political overtones. I think all the contributions so far have been well argued.

Cheers

Andy.

There is a funny write up about this in today's (Sat 31 Aug) Times.
Motoring topic - oil supplies:

There is one world leader who is looking after the interests of us Motorists: George W Bush.

He will unilaterally act against Iraq - in the interest of US Oil supplies and US security from terrorists. This should help the rest of the world both directly (secure oil suplies) and indirectly (eg. it will remove another excuse and source of asylum seekers, as it has done with Afghan refugees: they can no longer claim persecution).

G W Bush will then move on to dealing with other tyrants/terrrorist-breeders in other regions of the world (including all those countries in the Middle East who are currently against attacking Saddam because they themselves are dictatorships and breed terrorists). GW Bush's actions (like Churchill & Britain in the WW2) will make for a safer world and allow people to live in their own lands without fear.

Funny how this thread has popped up again, almost two years to the day.

Less amusing that nothing seems to have changed - unless it's changed for the worse.

I presume you mean the points raised in the thread - you've caused it to pop up again...:-)
