Am I the only person who uses a tapered slip lane (on the exit leg) when turning left at a T-junction or crossroad? Everyone I've followed has turned left as if the slip lane didn't exist.

You still have to give way as you move along the slip road and the worst place to be caught stationary is near its thin end.
I wait until there is a space to slot into and use it as an acceleration lane - that is what it is there for.
Don't assume someone will give way just because you are in the acceleration lane - they are not obliged to do so.

Some ambiguity here as to which road has the tapered bit. The OP said in the exit road, which I take to mean the side road you are just about leave, by making a left turn onto the main road?
I agree people who refuse to move over into the lane are maddening, because often they continue to block the other right-turning lane, or cause you to miss acceleration opportunities if you want to turn left.
Otherwise, ijws 15's advice makes sense.

I`m with Sluggo on this. ;-)
Same here...

Sorry for the ambiguity, I was struggling to find the right words to describe it. I mean the main road and I should have called it a tapered acceleration lane.

I use them as well, MrS!
On the way home from work there's a dual carriageway with one and many drivers not only don't use it, but then go from the junction straight into the outside lane! There's a roundabout round the corner ahead but plenty of room not to have to cross straight away... I have seen some near misses with people coming up fast in the outside lane having moved out to let the car out from the junction and then to find that car goes straight across in front of them!

They sound a good idea in theory, but all too often I've seen people using them with (apparently) no intention of stopping if necessary.
They continue to dawdle along at 10mph right up to the end of the taper and then just 'pop out' onto the main carriageway at that speed, irrespective of oncoming traffic.

And the rotation of my stiff neck is greatly exaggerated by these tapering slip lanes or any angled lane meeting at a T-junction. I find it difficult trying to look right if the angle that the lane makes with the main road is much greater than 90 degrees if I am making sense?
|
And the rotation of my stiff neck .........
It's probably due to arthritis. May I suggest you start taking glucosamine tablets and Omega 3 capsules daily? It stopped the pain and stiffness in my neck ~ and elsewhere. I can give you details of the products I take, and the online supplier if you like.

A good percentage of drivers don't know what slip lanes are for, although it matters most when a decent slip lane is provided to enable joining drivers to reach motorway speed before slotting in and some damn learner mimses to a halt on the thing trying to kill everyone in sight, ought to be banned for it...
But what about the white cross-hatching sometimes seen under trees or overhanging street furniture, as a warning to high vehicles not to hit their roofs on whatever it is? I see lots of ordinary cars driving round these and getting in the damn way, even police cars. What on earth is the matter with people? Intellectual overload, enforced mimsing and driving by numbers have made many of us into brainless robots if you ask me.

You were missed Lud. Are you going to regale us with tales from your antipodean adventure sometime ? How's the toe BTW ?

Been there, done that and in fact have been taking oil capsules and liquids straight from the bottle for decades. Glucosamine/Condroitin and blends of same I have tried on and off but they can upset the digestive system.
I have bought all mine online from www.healthspan.co.uk - excellent company - no affiliations etc!

Me too. There's obviously nothing I can teach you on this subject.

Have you tried Simply supplements. I find their prices more competitive. I've no connection.

Noooooo! I work for Healthspan ! Writing 'simplysupplements' is like saying Pepsi to a coke employee!
All joking aside I can vouch for Healthspan and will hand on heart say they have the highest standards of any company I've worked for in the last 20 years. If anyone needs any help or advice with supplements, I am happy to help.

Chondroitin has some side effects I can do without, but fish oil and glucosamine seem fairly benign:)

What's a tapered slip lane?

What's a tapered slip lane?
It's a conical tube to assist in the accurate pouring of tablets and food supplements down your throat.

What's a tapered slip lane?
I apologised yesterday for using the word "slip" and agreed that I should have said tapered "acceleration" lane. It's a lane which tapers from being a full car's width at the beginning to nothing at the end.
