03 1.6 Heating problems - Andrew404
Hi guys,
I am having a problem with my heating: It doesn't work. It started failing intermittantly at first and now it doesn't work at all. The exception to this was yesterday when on a long journey, I had been driving for around 70 miles and it started to work. At this point I checked my engine temp which was at virtually zero. Since then, it hasn't worked but my engine temp seems to be fine. Any ideas on what this could be? I don't know much about car engines but if it's something that's easily fixed I don't mind giving it a go.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy.

Is the blower working?

Try a new winter thermostat which opens approx 92 deg, and flush out the heater matrix with a back flush.

It sounds like the thermostat is sticking open to me, not an expensive part to buy but I'm not sure of the hassle factor of changing it on a 1.6 Astra.

When you say "engine temp seems to be fine", what is the gauge reading, and how long does the car take to warm up?

I had a similar problem. It turned out there was a leak from the water pump. After replacing this it worked fine.

It sounds like there is air in the system, try bleeding the system, there should be a bleed valve somewhere at the top of the system. run the engine then open the valve to let the air out. (Beware hot water).

The cooling system on a Vauxhall shouldn't need bleeding. Any air in the system will find its way to the expansion tank. No bleed valve as not required.
