Withnail and I.
We've all made insane journeys in totally decrepit cars like that.

The scene as they approach London weaving in and out of traffic reminds me of a few "lost weekends" of my youth.

It's all about taking a modified Renault 4 to a car show (in Amsterdam) about the time of the first Apollo moon landings.

( I also liked Vanishing Point :-) )

The Cannonball Run.

not sure this strictly qualifies as obviously the car wasn't the main player..but The Blues Brothers is my nomination.

The outrageous car crash scene(s) near the end played to 'Sweet Home Chicago', brilliant. Must dig out that CD.

Wow......Sleddale is lovely, but £145k is a bit steep and it's a bit of a drive to the cake shop in Penrith.

The Italian Job.

Ooh, that was a good one, too. I especially liked the bit when the Italian police in their underpowered car chased a mini up onto a roof, and their siren faded quirkily as the police car ran out of steam.

I watched the Fast & The Furious, Tokyo Drift at the weekend. Not as good as the two previous films.

Grand Prix... for those incredible racing sequences... especially as I've now driven down some of the public roads many of the circuits used in the 60s... makes your hair stand on end knowing they drove down those roads at 170+mph...

Italian Job (original) for humour...

Has to be Gung Ho with (pre batman) Micheal Keaton......still makes me laugh.

For sheer unremitting suspense it has to be Speilberg`s "Duel".

Christine. And the one that was on over christmas, something like its a weird weird weird world, cant remember the title but was old and amusing, had a convertible beetle in it, might jog someones memory of the title!!

I really like the original gone in sixty seconds, real stunts done with real cars on real roads!
The greatest car movie of all time. - Pugugly
Bizzarly the 1959 film adaptation of "On the Beach" - Neville Shute's novel an excellent race sequence involving an Austin Healey and an XK120 or 150 - closely followed by "Ice Cold in Alex" Somewhat spoiled by the longshot of a LWB Landie at the end. Italian Job (the original) still the best proper car based film - watched it in HD over Christmas - still up there with the best that.

EDIT:- Just read this on Wiki -

The racing sequences were filmed at Riverside Raceway in California. These scenes include an impressive array of late 1950s sports cars, including examples of the Jaguar XK150 and Jaguar D-type, Porsche 356, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing", AC Ace, and Chevrolet Corvette.

Beat that for a cast.

This thread sent me off to one of those film review sites and I was reading the reviews of GP and others mentioned here... right at the end of the GP reviews was this guy who obviously hates it and finished off by saying that "Driven" with Stalone was far better... gave me the biggest laugh of the day!!

Perhaps we should start another for "worst" car film... Driven should be somewhere near the top of that pile I think!

(So I have done!!)

Pretty similar to The Love Bug, which is mentioned as one of the worst car films ;-) With such a good cast of cars and Carey Loftin as stunt driver I think it's ace. Anyone who can get an old VW over 100mph is more than a hero in my book.

Anyone seen The Fast Lady? It's an early 60s film with a 1920s Bentley and it's got some very good chases, with plenty of interesting street scenery of course.

Certainly up there with best car chases ever is The French Connection - chasing the overhead train - the woman in the pram - all shot ad-libbed and without permission apparently.

Ad to that, the legendary Gene Hackman, who has the most menacing screen presence since Robert Mitchum.

What a film.

Genevieve again, not just for the Darracq and the Spyker but for the fragrent, tragic, Kay Kendall and the plethora of early 50s and pre-war cars and trucks.
The Blue Lamp has a chase filmed around North London between a Nash and several police Humbers with bells...all speeded up. Scrubs Lane hasn't got a car visible on it !
And for us bikers, of course, Easy Rider.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!!

I saw that when it came out and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Watching a TV re-run some thirty years later I saw it for what it was - deeply embarrassing tosh. Apparantly, "Captain America" could only run at a max speed of 25mph before it became dangerously unstable and Jack Nicholson had to resort to "Medication" every time he had to sit on it.
The greatest car movie of all time. - Lud
Oh dear. They're nearly all total carp when you get right down to it. 2 Lane Blacktop, Bullitt, Genevieve and the Blues Brothers are all good though, in their different ways.

Anything with speeded-up footage is just pukeworthy. Herbie films and other fantasy carp too, especially carpy carpy pop pop and other baby stuff.

Films about motor racing never come off for some reason. Even car enthusiasts can't make them work. So far anyway.

My Cousin Vinnie has a car in the middle of it and a very winsome young woman who is a car expert and understands LSDs.

I will be back in England at the weekend, insh'allah. Hope my jalopy is still working and hasn't been lifted.

There have been some nice cameo roles for cars. Ones that spring to mind:

Orson Well's late arrival in the Third Man, in an enormous limousine seen only in silhouette, which apparently really was his own car.

Nothing I'd like more HB, except that here in Dunedin, NZ, it's more like climbabout... My sister, a doctor, tried to kill me yesterday by making me rush up a vertical path to see a Giant's Causeway formation known as the Organ Pipes... said it would have been good for me.

It's colder and rainier here too. But the food is just as good if not better. What with half-price petrol (going up though), wombats, pies, kangaroos etc. I could happily spend a year or three here and in Oz. But 'duty', smirk, calls, dammit.

Just off to try to photograph some spoonbills. Yesterday I was just zooming in on them from the road when a 4wd came hooning past and they flew away. Honestly, these fast drivers...

Seals have incredibly bad breath. Sperm whales are chocolate brown and very dignified.
