My car (1996 A4 1.8) pulls to the left, when I swap the front tyres with each other, it pulls equally to the right, so I conclude the front tyres are worn rather than the tracking being drastically out. They have 4mm tread.
Is it safe to move them to the rear? Does 'wander' occur from the back?
I'm keeping the car for 3 more months so don't want to buy new tyres, but feel free to advise me to.....
Thanks

What make and type of tyre does the car have on each axle ?
Are they uni-directional or bi-directional tyres ?
When you say they pull, do you mean when you brake or does the car track across to any given side as you drive along whilst accelerating or cruising ?

Watch this:

Video from Fifth Gear showing difference in wet braking performance with worn tyres on front then rear axles. In answer to your question - NO.
FWIW I can remember always being told to fit new tyres to rear axle too.

Video from Fifth Gear....
The only connection with 5th gear is the presenter VBH. The vid actually came from the etyres website and was recently posted elsewhere on here:-

I am never convinced by this, my rear tyres have plently of thread in them but I fitted my new ones to the front as its a front wheel drive car its where most the wear is. I only ever do 30-40mph and just 'mute' around the city. If I was doing losts of high speed of country driving then I would certainly think long and hard about fitting the good tyres to the rear.
