never buy a new car--wait 1/2/3 year on model u like
learnt my lesson
depreciation is awesome
even for a golf gti
|
So, what's new here? Especially for a tarted up car, which you paid ridiculous price for when it is, after all, it's only a VW Golf.

yes--you are totaly right---i bought the hype

|
depreciation is awesome
only if you sell it. The longer you keep it the less of an issue it becomes.
|
Price paid, year of model, mileage, condition, price offered?
Same old, same old boring VW slagging thread without any details and substance.
Yawn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
keeping car---2007
19inch alloys
leather seats
sun roof
with extras 25k
dealer said they would only offer 9k
anyway ---this is my last car--i enjoy it---nice to drive
|
£25K, why did'nt you have an R32 for a bit more? The options make it more desirable but add very little to the used car price. £5Ks worth of options is madness
|
It's not the car's fault. Much greater forces at play. Not really worth selling any car right now unless it no longer works or for some other reason no longer fits your needs.
Trouble is, I wish no one else knew that.
|
was trying to raise quick finance for a blackcab taxi
but thought i could get 18k
not selling now
yeah 5k extras were a bit over the top
|
|
Not sure why you *needed* to know what the trade-in value was if you're so keen on the car & planning to keep it? Also, would have thought the optimal wheel size for realistic driving conditions would be 17inch - surely 19inchers just crash & skip over anything but the smoothest of roads & be mega uncomfortable?
|
|
To OP - bad luck. Lesson learned for next time, but in the meantime, enjoy the car. Also reflect on the fact that when you bought the car, 2 years ago, you could not have predicted the depreciation. And you have enjoyed it for 2 years.
Dox - that's not very sympathetic is it...?

But true. The extras were a significant % of the purchase price. You never get the money back on extras.

That's a bit harsh Dox - I don't think he is knocking VW in particular - more the fact you lose more with a new car purchase.
I like the GTI and agree that you should keep it and enjoy it - as altea says the depreciation gets less and less that way.
|
Harsh maybe, factual all the same. What bought your attention to the thread Mr P, VW?How much was an R32 at the same time? £27K?
|
|
The example here is analogous to people who over develop their houses in grotty streets to such an extent that they'll never be able to sell those houses to recoup the 'extras' spent on them. Buyers simply won't buy a house if the location isn't right.
Who in their right mind would specify a Golf with all those extras unless they were intent on enjoying them for many years.
For that price, you could get a very nice BMW (and a quality motor at that).
|
To be honest dox - the new car element caught my eye first and when I read the OP I did wonder why he mentioned VW - I bet he has not lost as much as I have on a 2.4 Accord that I bought from new. As (self appointed) chief VW knocker I must try and balance this thread out a little. Still - if vulture does keep it along time at least he won't have to pay the ridiculous valve clearance adjustments I do on every other service so I might be able to top him out here.
BTW - I have not caught up on your current motoring pleasures - are you still enjoying a Golf ?

The MK4 tdi is 8 YO this month, its only had service items, a brake light switch and a MAF. Now joined by a 1999 V5 Golf highline estate 130K miles bought for £1K (full VW history), everything works too! Audi 2.6 V6 cab R plate 100K miles, two previous owners and has proved troublesome, currently sorn (no time to play with it). MK3 golf tdi estate currently breaking for spares. 1998 Skoda octavia 1600 estate, bought and sold......Yuk! My ears will never recover
Hope you and yours are well ;o)

I do wish that some of these threads took place face to face - I'd be interested to see if certain people were as rude and/or offensive to other people in real life as they are here.
|
Maybe I look at this site differently to others - I like the frankness and the honesty and suspect that face to face would be no different - I see it all as friendly banter anyway and a bit of winding up - nothing more. Whenever anyone has said anything remotely harsh to me on one thread they have probably been helpful on another.
People like Dox, oldgit and altea are always game for a bit of sport - I think - I hope I have read it correctly and apologies for naming names but as I say - I see it all as fun.
There was one time when someone got into name calling of another poster directly and I think it got stopped quickly. My guess is that if we all agreed with each other we would stick to our own makers owners club forums and spend all evening blowing smoke up each others bottoms.
|
Smokey, OP did'nt find my comments offensive. I'm one of a few here that swims against the the tide, the mods have edited one of my posts in over 3 years(?) and then it was because the thread had gone off topic and others had become offensive.
If you make a bad purchase in the first place and in the mean time that part of the Market suffers a downturn, learn from it.
Read OPs first post again, its meaningless with out the details that I asked for.
|
So the real point is... 5k of extras are worth 50p after you drive out of the garage?

Smilingvulture, we've all made decisions we regret only to be very coy about it afterwards so well done on the honesty. You'll never find out about how I lost £60 (piffling amount compared to 25k sure) in Nottingham in 1993. Never!
Enjoy the car, sounds rather nice actually despite the cost. Don't tear yourself to bits over it.
|
lost wallet? Hooker? Pimp? Mugging?
All of the above?
Does Mrs Focus know?
|
After 15 years it's probably a bit of a blur for Focus.
|
It took me a nanosecond to get that. :-)
