First British patent for windscreen wipres - bintang
Interesting. Has anyone come across a wiper that moves across the entire screen from side to side? My motor engineer father-in-law once mentioned such a device he had serviced pre-war but I can't recall on what car. He said the drive was complicated.

Boats use them.

Boats often have a wiper spindle through a hole in the middle of the screen, rotating continuously.

Trains and I think some buses have the side-to-side wipers. It's not all that complicated, just involves a parallelogram of linkages instead of a single arm.

You are thinking of a Kent clear view screen, a rotating glass disc, the hoizontal sweep wipers are belt driven.

May be, but I have seen wipers that had a motor mounted in the middle of a fixed pane of glass, the spindle projecting through a hole.

I have not seen that type, sounds like a good solution for boats, cant see any of the marine systems catching on in cars though.

That type is driven from a spindle. It seems this one had a horizontal track.

Lancia produced a show car based upon the Stratos rally car in the late 1970s. Can't remember the name but saw it in CAR. It has a single vertical wiper blade that moved in a straight horizontal line across the screen, but the caption said "it will only work when they have developed a mechanism that is reliable" or some such get out. In other words it looked great, but had no idea how to make it work!
