Hi,some sensible and knowledgable help needed please!
I am interested in a couple of cars, one is the 2.2 Elite Auto and the other a 1.8VVTI SRI
manual. Both nice cars.I would like the auto, but some would think I,ve gone loopy in this
climate!?
Anybody have either of these cars or any comments would be helpfull?
Thanks...Phil.

If you are refering to the cold spell, we only get a few icy / snowy days a year in the UK, (depending on where you live) so the auto will be fine for the vast majority of the time. I live in Scotland and average 3 or 4 days snow a year (dont need a 4x4). ;-)

I have a Signum with the 2.2 petrol engine but with a manual box. Very nice smooth torquey chain cam engine and some say it is as fuel efficient as the 1.8 without the power deficit. Sorry, can't advise re the auto.

Sorry Old Navy,I was thinking more of the current financial climate actually, but thanks anyway.;-)
I am planning to keep the car for some years and am slightly concerned that the 2.2 engine's emissions may become an issue in the not too distant future ....?
The auto is a 56 reg,41,000miles,£6995,the SRI is a 56reg,21,000miles, £5995.

No problem, I wrong ended the stick.

I have to say I was unsure as well.

Phil, I've got a 2.2 (petrol) auto Elite. 06 reg. Main issue is the cold leather seats this time of year which even with the seat heaters switched on take a few mins to warm up. Worse for the back seat passengers who complain for several miles.
Apart from that, its fine. It's got a 'tiptronic' type gearbox where you can sequentially go through the gears manually or just leave it in D. The LED display on the dash tells you what gear you're in.
I average 24 to 28 mpg around town, and 34 to 36 mpg on motorways + long runs. Mind you I've got a heavy right foot. I once got my previous 53 reg 2.2 Vectra Elegance down to something like 17 mpg. Not managed that with my 06 reg (yet)
Yes, the RFL is more expensive than the 2.2 with the manual box.

Not sure, Eden Vauxhall are still advertising 08 Vectras for 7K with 1K minimum trade in on the radio, can't see any mention on their web site.

Those cheap Vectras are a serious bargain aren't they? Whether or not they are your favourite car, if your need is for something in that category and you prefer new or nearly new they are incredibly cheap. I expect they will appeal greatly to companies who need to replace fleet cars in these trying times.

Hi all, thanks for all your comments.
Yes,these Vectra's do seem(?) like good value relatively speaking.I've had several 2.2SRI manuals as company cars and liked them, but is the 1.8 underpowered?
I need to replace an old Laguna 1,which as anybody knows who has had one are very comfortable and quiet, but a bit long in the tooth now!!
The Vectra seems like the obvious choice but any other suggestions would be great,
thanks,
Phil.

Yes, at that price I'm even tempted to trade in my lovely green Vectra B; at my 30K per year I'd hope to get 6 years use out of one, so roughly 1K per year depreciation. More than my usual bangernomics Vauxhalls, but not that much more. More money on servicing than I'm used to, but hopefully less on broken bits.

07 1.8 Mondeos at MotorPoint for £5999 may also be worth a look.
|
|
Having driven both Vectra and Mondeo I would go for the Mondeo every time. My personal opinion is that the seats were very uncomfortable and I also had a similar experience with an Astra.
|
Vectra & heart in the same sentence? How on earth somebody can buy a Vectra with his heart is beyond me.
I run a 1.8 '99 Vectra that has probably depreciated 90% over the nearly four years I've owned it. It's uncomfortable inside, mechanically dodgy.
That said, over 40k miles it has cost me: 1 cylinder head (£400); 1 cambelt (£180); 1 part exhaust (£70); 1 alternator (£200); 4 oil changes (£100); 2 headlight bulbs (£10); 1 taillight bulb (free).
Although it drives like a dog, that's cheap motoring. It can be persuaded to achieve 44mpg over a tank if cruised at 70mph.
|
Oh yes, and is the 1.8 underpowered? Mine has loads of power. But being the 16v it's not where you need (I expect?) the power. Nothing, nothing, nothing, Whooomp! Bang! wheels spin and car takes off like a scalded cat.
That said, I've never felt it underpowered - even when full to the gunwhales.
The 1.6 Cavalier was a much sweeter experience. That didn't have the same power, but delivered it more smoothly.

Hi Mapmaker,
I was referring to smaller/manual versus larger/auto rather than the actual make, but i take your point thanks!..I have noticed how hard the Vectra sets have gone, whether they are uncomfortable i dont know...
What would be your choice in this sector?..Mondeo?..Avensis?...Passat?

Phil - For what it's worth I have both a Signum ( which is a Vectra in a suit ) and a Mondeo. There is not a lot to choose between them in reality but the Ford is my slight favourite.
If you plan to do regular long trips the Mondeo is in my opinion the more comfortable car and feels somehow more connected to the road. THe Vauxhall is however, also very good. Either car is a good workhorse.
In my view I would base your decision on price and condition rather than get too locked in to brand. In either instance I would recommend opting for the larger engines for the flexibility. The 1.8s in both cases are adequate but no more and don't seem to offer a huge fuel saving over the larger ones. The Mondeo Mk3 engines are all chain cam as is the Vauxhall 2.2 but the VX 1.8 is I believe, a belt engine.

Hi H.B.,
Thanks,I think thats fair comment. My old Laguna goes quite well for an 1800 because I think the power/weight ratio is quite high.I dont expect either Mondeo or Vectra 1800's to be so...
I do quite a lot of motorway journeys of about 90 miles,so something comfortable would be good!
I'm going to look at a 1.8SRI (56reg) and a 1.8 Mondeo Edge(07reg) this evening.Might be the proud owner..;-)...tomorrow.
Thanks also to everyone for their help....GREAT FORUM!!
Phil.
