Would someone please advise which sites give the most accurate car valuations?

I've tried What Car and Parkers for the same time and there is a big difference in variation - even taking in the lower than average mileage for the car in question.

Many thanks.

If you head over to the Vauxhall website, then select Finance & Services, you will see "Value your vehicle" and this is the Glass price guide values.

I'm sure this topic gets discussed here regularly, so try a forum search. Glass's tends to lead the market while the others follow it. I'm also sure that the market is in flux these days so any figures won't be very accurate. At the end of the day you can only test the market and look for the best cost-to-change (if you are thinking of changing).

There's a link to Glass's guide for the Telegraph here:

Thanks all.

I'm actually looking to buy a car and so I was trying to find an accurate valuation for that car. I have no part ex.

Thanks.

Probably the best way to value a car at the moment is simply to look on somwewhere like Autotrader and see what sort of prices they are going for.

It also depends on where/how you buy.

What are you looking for and how are you going to buy it?

You mean by this what sort of prices they are asking?

What they actually go for can be a lot less

Yaris 1.3 from old model with A/C and CD player.

Have this quote from Arnold Clark, though I know I can get warranty a bit cheaper. Car seems overpriced to me and mileage is a bit low:

55 plate yaris 5dr 1.3 vvti T-spirt in ice blue with 7154 miles on the clock (!) £6488
6m tax £66
delivery charge £50
service plan £179 ( 2 mots + 2 services )
1 years warranty £295 ( 2years would be £395 )
3 years vehicle replacement insurance £199
total £7277

Why the delivery charge? Are they doing you a favour by selling you the car? Would be wise to "Google" Arnold Clark to see what customer feedback they get I would suggest having known people buy from them in the past the aftercare and selling techniques are worth looking at in detail. Why would you pay £199 for vehicle replacement insurance? Is this the same as GAP insurance?

Check drivedthedeal for price of a new one. They were doing a new Yaris 1.3 for less than £7,500.

Thanks Davey. Just seen that.

Worth looking into for sure!

My main worry was that some owners of the new car have been disappointed reliability-wise.

It might be worth trying to get a substantial discount on one of the used ones I was looking at, bearing in mind the discount available on new cars.

Do you think dealers would play ball?

I have bought off Arnold several times and have had no problems. I have also seen the bogus website set up to blacken their name and I found it not only offensive, but ridiculous.

I think if you have no part ex then you are in a tremendous position of power but what you need to do is decide how much you are paying. Don't ask them for their lowest price, tell them what you are prepared to pay and also prepared to walk away if you don't get!

Its useful to spend a day, go round a few dealers, see who has what and then go back. But as I say all the time, be honest with dealers and it works in your favour. Tell them you are willing to sign today if deal can be made, have the figure in your head, tell them you can get it from x dealer at this price etc. Always useful to quote a few prices, drive the deal, motorpoint etc as well. If they know you are genuine, they, in my experience, will be genuine back.

One thing though for Arnold, see who the previous owner was - they sell a lot of ex-hire cars. Not necessarily always a bad thing, but make sure you are armed with all the information before deciding.

And once you agree a price that you are happy with, then stop looking at cars! Nothing worse than signing for a car then spending a week analysing the papers to find one cheaper and then it sets you off in a bad mood!

I worked in consumer protection for some years and AC provided a consistent supply of complainants to our office.

Just type your desired spec into the Autotrader website. By typing in the details of the car you have been quoted on I can come up with several examples with less than 20000 miles for under 6 grand screen price. In the current climate I would be looking to drive away at considerably less than screen price if you have no part ex, not paying considerably more as AC are trying to get you to do.

Also the quote for 1 years warranty at £295 is extortionate. Don't they have to provide 3 months warranty by law anyway, in which case that quote is £295 for 9 months! And as for delivery charge, why? Surely if you have seen the car at their site you can go back and pick it up. The 6 months tax should be your first thing to haggle into the price in any event, don't pay extra. Are you 100% sure Arnold Clark will still be around in 2 years to get the full value of their service plan? Vehicle Replacement Insurance?! You will be insuring the car yourself anyway won't you, why insure it twice?

If you must buy this particular car, do away with all the unnecessary extras and tell them you will take it for £6000, tax included and if they can't do that, make it clear you will walk away. They will come chasing you. Better still, buy from a dealer with a decent reputation.

As far as I have been able to ascertain, this has been a long running myth without any basis in fact. [unless you can prove me wrong].

What you do have, and what the dealer cannot take away, are your statutory rights - such as under the SOGA etc.

The most important one is the "six-month" rule whereby, in very simplistic terms: under 6 months and it is up to the seller to prove fault did not exist at time of sale, over 6 months and it is up to the buyer to prove the goods were faulty.

I would have thought valuations would now be more of a matter of how desperate seller is to sell and how desperate buyer is to change. Some dealer principles are standing on the bridge determined to treat every day as if nothing is happening in the financial world whilst others are lowering the lifeboats.

I went to my local AC dealership to purchase a car on behalf of my employer. I had quite specific needs with regards to engine size and colour but was quite flexible on the model. In order to do a deal before the impending financial year end I told them my budget and they came up with a Vectra SRi that fitted the bill and was 500 below my ceiling. Car was at a neighbouring dealership and they showed me a picture on their website. The manager even offered to split the £500 with me if I wanted the invoice to show the full amount, and I think he was only half joking.

I placed the order and then while browsing the internet at home that night saw the same car they had sold me, for a full £1000 less screen price at the dealership they were getting it from. The cheeky blighters had added £1000 to the sale price. IMHO this was plain greed, it was a straight forward sale to a large organisation that has bought several cars from them previously and they thought they could pull a fast one.

I went in to see the salesman and after half hearted attempts to claim it was a different car (it wasn't) he admitted the manager had told him to hike the price. I told them they could shove their car where the sun doesn't shine. My own personal experience of them is that they are not to be trusted and I would look elsewhere for any future purchases.

Pre reg Yaris 1.4d4d TR at Drive The Deal for £8995 on the road so with that in mind the AC deal is too dear. Good Luck with your purchase and enjoy.
