Which makes the logistics even more impressive
500 competitors - 217 bikes, 25 quads, 177 cars and 81 trucks
plus all the normal support for the competitors plus aircraft and helicopters and their support.

I heard this on the radio this morning, I felt a bit cheated ! Possibly not as disappointed as the punters who turned up at Lapland (Gloucester) though :-)

The paris dakar suffers from the same interference that killed wrc.

It was at its peak when the major makers made the HUGE monstrous purpose made offroaders. The big nissans and citroens, all banned of course.

You're right - still geographically closer to Dakar than the race venue !

Obviously South Africans win very little.
(Except of course Rugby World Cups and cricket Test series against the Australians in Australia) so could I just congratulate Geniel de Villiers for winning the Dakar Rally... even though it wasn't near Dakar, but across Chile and Argentina.
Thnx, Mods! :)

Well done SA !

eyethenkyoo, Pug, for the move of the post!

Having seen Saiz total his Toerag yesterday, and still get out and wave down the following driver, I must admit that this S American version looks even less fun than the African adventure!

Having seen Sainz total his Toerag yesterday and still get out and wave down the
following driver >>

it was a close run thing one of the BMW's didn't land on top of him...then later on the Mitsubishi....no wonder he was a tad miffed

being slightly unfair and a bit critical (from the safety and comfort of an armchair) some of Sainz's rescuers ignored a fundemental element of rescue i.e. their's and the patients safety has to come first otherwise you'll end up with more casualties and won't be in a position to help at all...and it was Sainz himself, still shaken up and no doubt shocked, who was the first really to recognise the danger they were all in... and it was a real danger, that Mitsubishi landing on you at speed from a 15 foot drop wouldn't have done them any favours
