Use a large pair of pliers or mole type grips to crush the base of the rotor arm.Once started ,you will be able to pick off the remainder. Not a good idea to use force from the top as the dizzy shaft could get damaged. Also cover the base of dizzy to catch the debris.hth

Make sure that there isn't a small grub screw holding it in place, as there is on some Bosch distributors.

The rotor arm on my 1996 AGG GTI 2L is held in place by a side pressure spring clip, and can be just pulled off, subject to any rust on the shalf.

Eventually I sought the services of a technical mate with a diagnostic device. The problem was the crankcase speed sensor. £169.00 from VAG or £48.00 from Bromsgrove Motor Factors ( I know its not an original part but hey £100.00 saving). Thanks to all for your suggestions I know I could of spent hundreds if I had'nt got it diagnosed.

My replacement crankshalf position/speed sensor came from GSF at a fair price. I fitted it two years ago and it has not given any problems in 20k miles, and I don't expect it to. I wonder if it will outlast the original VW part which lasted 130k miles/10 years.
