A watershed has been reached: it is no longer possible to search for a Pug 205 on the Autotrader website. How shall I fill in those idle moments?
Marking the passage of time ... - rtj70
Just tried to search and it is still possible. Okay it found 29 cars but it found them. Someone thinks an F reg 1.9 GTi with added body kit is worth £4995! Well it made me smile.

Works fine for me, 29 across the UK right now. Only six 309s, though.

You're right - the pick list actually reflects the available cars, which means that there are now none within 40 miles of here, tho there were about 10 last week. It seems a bit strange that they all vanished at once. Can there be a sudden demand? :-)

Every time I look at a 205 it makes me shudder to think what would happen in an accident. When you see one parked next to a modern 5-star supermini you realise how far the safety game has moved on in the past 15 years.

What other cars have disappeared from the Autotrader radar in recent years? Also, looking at some of the more preserved 205's on sale, at what point does a car become a rare classic as opposed to a well looked after daily driver. For example, I wonder if anyone still drives a Vauxhall Chevette because they simply haven't got round to changing it yet.

But the 205 is still on AutoTrader....

Your point about 205's in an accident.... what about original 60s Minis.
Marking the passage of time ... - Hector Brocklebank
It would be interesting to see how an original mini would perform in a EuroNcap crash test, not very well I assume. Having said that, it was a very safe car in its day. Passive safety was non-existent at that time anyway, but at least the mini offered superior road holding and visibility.

It was the low NCAP score that forced Rover to retire the "Mini Metro" aka Rover 100. It did very poorly. So an original mini...

Have you seen how tiny an original mini is next to a new one!

There's a green 3-door Chevette in regular daily use round my way. Y-reg example. Looks in good order and runs fine with little smoke. Always gives me a smile when I see it.

> worth £4995

Looking at a 205 GTI that's been modded in any way (except possibly the installation of an Mi-16 engine) makes me want to cry.

There has never been a better front wheel drive chassis than this, even after all these years. It drives perfectly as it is. Why do idiots think they can improve it with some Halfords vouchers? Grrrr....

A modded GTI is worth peanuts. A good original standard 1.9 with a sweet engine, clean bodywork, fit suspension and no silly mods - £1500 of anyone's money.

Nice to hear from another fan, DP. As you may know, I have >A good original standard 1.6 with etc.. < but I think you may find that the owners of such paragons may ask a bit more than that. Nowhere near £4995 though.

A peculiar circumstance (I forget now) left my x-wife and I with two of her company 1.9 GTis back in the 90s that had to be delivered to High Street Ken from North London early one morning. I took one, she took the other and we raced them in tandem at about 6am. Enormous fun and one of the only fond memories remaining that I have of her. She was a very aggressive driver, utterly fearless in London traffic and always having prangs and shunts. More than a year after we split I was still getting calls from insurance companies for witness statements.

> Company 1.9 GTis ...

Now that was an enterprising company, but wasn't it a risky choice of vehicle to hand out to staff?
Marking the passage of time ... - Big Bad Dave
Certainly in her case, after a few months they replaced it with a new Mazda 323 which was constantly in the shop for new plastic bumpers. They were always threatening to take it off her but the reality was that her job (selling ad space in a National Newspaper) meant that she was probably generating enough income for them to pay for the car in full every day.

risky choice of vehicle

I'd love to know the accident and theft statistics for the fleet! Cool if you were one of the lucky people to receive one.

I'd love one, even now. Unfortunately, it's would have been completely unsuited to what I need a car to do when brand new, never mind after 20 years of hard use and French build quality. When I have the space / cash to have a second car as a toy, though......

Cheers

"I'd love one, even now."

Me too. One car that I regret never having driven and probably never will is the 405 MI16. I reckon the reason I toiled so hard at Uni was because I was determined to have one.

Occasionally see mint ones on Autotrader and if I was still in the UK I might be tempted to have one for 6 months or so.

Plenty of 205s for sale on other free listing web-sites. Obviously can't say where, but - hint - they're mostly modded GTIs

Well I know where there is one!

An F plate, which was used daily, up till last week, when I managed to get the owner into his new (54 plate) Toyota Celica.

That was after weeks of auction hunting, to find a straight one.

& he still can't make up his mind to scrap the Pug!!
