2003 2.0 TDCi - Fault Code Reader - ITman
Anyone know of a cheap fault code reader that will cover my 2003 TDCi mondeo.
Although it has a 16pin OBDC II socket it will not read to a OBDC II reader. Suspect this is because it is pre 2004 when Euro cars were included. Car was first registered in June 2003. Mine I think uses EEC-V, or something like this.

Have found one that might work but this is Over £300, whereas the OBDC II reader that I have was only about £25.

Fault code reader or PC interface and software would be usefull.

You should be able to use a OBD2 reader / etc as its a modern car.

Try www.talktomycar.co.uk - they're quite helpful too.

Hi

Thanks for that. I did talk to talktomycar and have tried the one that they suggested, but it just gave an error message.

TDCi cars did not have OBDC II as standard (apart from in the USA) until Jan 2004, petrol from 2001, but some were included before this. Seems that Ford were slow to respond and left it till this later date. Before this you need a reader that will read Ford Code.

oh ok - interesting.

That will be expensive then.

Try these guys - also very helpful - www.ilexa.co.uk/content/section/2/2/

(but expensive products!)

Ford were not slow to respond;they complied with all legal requirements;you are confusing OBDII with EOBD which are not quite the same.Yes,some makes of cars were fitted with OBDII but only because they were sold in the US as well as the EU;Ford weren't and therefore did not use OBDII.

Hi

Appreciate that Ford did comply with all legal requirements, but other manufacturers did have OBDII slighly earlier.

Buit that is not really the issue.

What I was trying to find was one that would work with my car.

Having contacted the company I have quoted their system not only reads OBDII but also the earler Ford codes which are relevant to my June 2003 TDCi Mondeo.

I hope this link will therefore help others with a similar problem.

The speed at which Ford responded is really of no consequence.

OBDII and EOBD are similar but NOT the same, irrespective of what people trying to sell you equipment tell you.

Many professional Readers will read whatever you tell them too. As long as it is programmed correctly. At the end of the day its only software. And if you can pack enough of it onto one chip you could get it to read anybodies faults. Obviously they don't need to anymore as newer cars will have a OBDII sytem. Previous Ford models used other pin configurations and these are catered for by Draper readers. But the 16 pin socket was not catered for in the cheapy market.

The one my local garage uses is totally transparent to what system it uses as long as you use the correct connector the software works out the rest. But I expect he paid mega bucks for it. He is also a Ford Specialist.

When he connects to mine which has a OBDII connector, pins are in the same places, it automatically works out that it is not OBDII software it needs to use and adjusts to use the Ford Coding System.

Clever what softwarew can do. Thats why you pay the money for a versatile system.

We all sometimes have to trust what people tell us. And it you search long enough there are a number of threads concerning the company I mentioned that say that it will work with the earlier Mondeos.

As stated I am not abe to confirm this as yet and have no confirmation that it will read all codes, but they seem convinced that it will, also they are the manufacturers of this system and not just a retailer.

However I do agree that it is en expensive mistake if it doesn't work. Perhaps I will give them a call and get them to add a bit to this thread.

From what I've read here it appears that certain functions are limited to dealer tools -
parts coding for example. If you check out some threads that have replies from Screwloose you'll see what I mean.

Universal scanners will read EOBD codes but from what I gather they aren't as specific as true manufacturers codes and can have multiple meanings depending on the engine ECU fitted to the car in question. Maybe that is way the Launch X431 is £2995 +VAT. Dealer tools are very expensive too. As you say it's only software but if it's using copyrighted protocols or code there's only so much that can be done.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Hi

thanks for the constructive comments. I do take your point.

Shame that its so complicated to find something suitable.

The one I quoted does say that you need the EEC-V ECU which mine has.

Hi,

I take it from your username that you work in IT or know lots about it? That being the case you could try getting hold of a Euroscan interface box and giving that a whirl. I bought one some time ago but I'm only just getting around to sorting it out. It needs 2 DOS native RS232 ports, easy on an old desktop PC but not so easy with a laptop. It seems the best PCMCIA card for this use is the Socket Serial ones but they're expensive.

Thread on the item here -

Hi

Only one that I have found so far is the pc based one.

www.ukobd.co.uk/gstore/store/g_viewIte m.asp?idProduct=63

It is the MBD3210

Cost a wopping £199-00 ish but seems to look OK

It appears to be purely Ford based so should use their codes.

Haven't got the money to buy one at the moment as my EGR valve cost £185.

Hi,

I've finally received the Socket Serial card that I bought from an Australian chap via Ebay. It's took a month to arrive but postage was cheap at $20. Hopefully I'll have it setup soon and should know if the interface is good or not. I'll post an update if helps?
