Series II 2004-on.. much better than the series I? - M.M
After my thread when looking at a 2002 Octivia estate TDi where I was dissapointed in the ride quality I wondered about the Series II. Has anyone traded up to have experience of improvements in ride comfort and overall cabin noise levels? I see from various reports that they changed the suspension and stiffened the bodyshell on the series II which ought to have adressed the issues that stopped me buying the 2002 car.

I can't compare Mk1 and Mk2, but a family member has recently purchased a 2008 Octavia petrol VRS.
Its an extremely impressive car and I'm very taken with it. The engine is excellent and the general ride and handling are very good. The ride is firm but surprisingly good given its on 18" wheels. The bodyshell feels very rigid and the car feels generally very 'Audi-like' but for much less money.
I would say that one downside is noise, especially from the rear. It seems to be tyre noise. Looking around the back of the car there is very little sound proofing, so matters could probably be improved with some sound deadening mats.

I guess the only question mark would be reliability, which being a VAG car could be a bit suspect?

I dont know about the ride being "better" but the Mk2 I tested for the day had a typically VW ride, much like the golf. a firm and controlled ride but not hard, little body roll, good for 600 miles a day no problem.

Lot of road and tyre noise tho.

Thanks guys. I still get this feeling that I ought to be able to get on with an Octavia so will try and find an affordable Series II to test. However if they do suffer high road noise levels despite a decent ride I may have to pass again. Shame if that's the case.
