Stolen Door Mirror Glass - Amazing theft? - meldrew
My wife recently returned to her car to find the nearside wing
mirror glass missing. No other damage and wires disconnected.
Having paid £80 for a replacement I can only assume it was
a case of theft. I'm astonished!

Thread title amended to be more specific... we know it was easy and not amazing. Rob

As a reported recently re a replacement Focus heated door mirror.
One of the lads at the Ford garage had removed the cracked glass and replaced it quicker than I could pay the £20+ (& £3 for labour) for it with a CC.
So that is an example of how quick the task is and also the value of the item
.
£80 seems quite a lot but I guess it includes a minimum 30 min labour and depends on the brand.

This has been discussed on here before about removing mirror glass. e.g.

So don't debate it too long ;-) It's been done before.

But the cost does seem excessive! I think you were had - but that another topic.

I can still remember in the early 1970s our family returning to the Cortina and setting off, only to realise that it was so cold because one of the ungodly had stolen the windscreen.

Apologies , I had not read the original thread. It is a German manufacturer
and the price seems OK. The car is six years old and there is no sign
of a replacement anywhere on the internet. I guess it could have been
worse. My local garage have just had to pay for a new bonnet, roof and
windscreen as the main dealer who serviced it never bothered to lubricate
the bonnet catch!! I don't begrudge them the money.

Please explain why a new roof and windscreen was needed - I for one am intrigued.

RTJ - The car was test driven after a very minor repair. Bonnet not shut properly
and because bonnet catch not lubricated (ever!) at main dealer services the
safety catch failed and up it went!

I actually feel very sorry for local garage having known the owner most of my life and know them to be as good as anyone. This has not a lot to do with the mirror except in the full analysis of running costs £80 incl VAT is peeing in the ocean as my original windscreen was chipped and the bonnet had a slight dent. Win some, lose some I guess!

Next time i might go to Car Transplants in Nantwich for a mirror but have to go South tomorrow to play Santa Claus.

I also feel a lot better hearing what happened to others. Thanks and commiserations all!

Thanks meldrew - I thought with a catch that had not been lubricated it would have been stick shut.

Now a stolen windscreen might be amazing. Stolen door mirror glass - no.

Did anyone not realise as soon as you got back to the car!

Acquaintance of mine had the engine stolen from his Porsche 911 while it was parked in a multi-storey.

A mate of mine had the windscreen stolen from his BMW during the day while he was at work but this was back in the '90's, the car was old enough to have a rubber seal rather than a bonded screen. Easy enough to do and any passers-by would assume nothing toward was going on as it's not the sort of thing one would expect.

Credit Crunch? Somebody at work had an ABS speed sensor stolen from their 53 Corsa last weekend. One corner was jacked up, the wheel removed, the wheel bolts stolen and the sensor stolen, and the hub/disc dropped onto the wheel on the floor.

Only after moving off and finding it a touch breezy.

But I see I've been trumped already!

>It was so cold because one of the ungodly had stolen the windscreen.

I heard this tale many years ago, relating to someone admiring the clarity of his new car's screen from his front window. It had gone in the night.

The cost of a replacement mirror glass explains why it was nicked.

70's Cortinas were famous for having the rear light lenses stolen as the originals faded. They could be removed from the outside by undoing 4 screws.

I know of a case where someone had their starter motor stolen when they were at a dance in a local village hall.

A few years ago i went with my friend in his moms brand new Micra to go to the auction in Birmingham. When we came out and went back to the carpark the bonnet was missing off it. I have never laughed so hard in my life - although my friend was not amused. It was a strange purple metalic colour, someone must have needed one and spotted the car!
It was tipping down with rain as well so probably didnt do the car much good.

Local vauxhall dealer recently had the alternator & battery taken from their parts delivery van, (Combo 1.7td '57 reg). It was left in their compound overnight, but that still didn;t put the tea-leafs off!! They just chopped the wiring harness's to get at the components.
