Anyone recommend a motor [Saloon] thats fairly quick and economical either diesel / petrol looking for mid-range ie mondeo/passat/ audi /lexus Bhp around 130-150. 1.9-2.2 engine age around 2005-2006.

Of the four you mention you'll get a newer Mondeo for your money than the others. Go for the 2.0 TDCI: the Passat 2.0 TDI is a good car too. Audi and Lexus will be more expensive: think also about the Japanese contenders - Honda Accord, Mazda 6 and Toyota Avensis.

Well now, predictably enough I'm going to recommend the Mondeo too. Either with the 2.0 petrol engine or either of the diesels. Excellent all rounder with a bit of driver pleasure thrown in.
I am also going to recommend the Vauxhall 2.2 petrol engine. The cars it is bolted into are OK too but that engine....what a peach. Like driving powerful chocolate.

Ex-Lax is a powerful chocolate but I've never seen an engine described in this way before...irritates the carp out of you ? :)

As for recommending a car, manual Volvo S60 2005 163PS EuIII D5 model.
166g/km CO2, low to mid40's mpg.
