A Defender but that's not much better.

Our 53 plate Freelander has been all but faultess since we got it with delivery mileage.
|
With all respect Nsar - what do you mean by all but fautless.
Could this be one of those posts about my car being totally reliable except for problems x y & z etc ?
BTW - I really hope it has been reliable but reliable and freelander don't normally go in the same sentence.

Yes this is
"what should i do to spite my face - cut my nose off or cut my ear off"
|

I've had two Freelanders, one in 98 and another in 2002. Both were great without any problems at all.

X Trail (Petrol 2.5 Auto) an exceptional car - everything very good apart from fuel consumption and Nissan dealers - the best car for the money I have ever had, and that includes many new cars including a BMW7, a couple of Jag xj's and a Range Rover (another exceptional car, but so many problems - even more than the Jags) - but I would never buy another Nissan because of Nissan and the Nissan dealer problems I have had - they have the ability to spoil a good car.
|
I'll second that. Running an X Trail 2.5 ( petrol ) auto since August, paid a very low price on a 4 year old car, fully loaded, and now the VED isn't going to be £400 after all. Somebody lost £20k in 4 years on it, and although fuel isn't a virtue , if you do 100 miles a week like us , it ain't really an issue.
The Diesels 2.2 have had plenty of published problems. Find a T - Spec 2.5 petrol like ours, ensure the manifold doesn't blow and you have a very very good car .

Have you considered a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4? Either of them just go on forever.
|
They are both vehicles high on the list for traders not to touch if all possible, CRV or Rav 4 are far far better as harryhammer has stated the Honda especially.
|
So its a medium SUV? What about...
Kia Sportage/Sorento(5 year warranties)
Hyundai Tucson/Santa Fe(5 year warranties)
Chevrolet Captiva
Vauxhall Antara
|
Choice of car depends on how often you actually want to go offroad.
|
harryhammer. What happened to the Focus you bought instead of a Freelander back in August?

Still got it, but the wife still hankers after a 4x4 for that extra visability etc.
I've looked at RAV4 and CRV but you have to go older for the same money!
As for the other options, struggle to get low mileage for same money.

Didn't want to post before MOT this morning in case I jinxed it!
My sister has the 04 X-trail sport petrol and I have the 54 SVE cdi. She uses hers in the Borders with horse and dog activities plus two children and loves it.
As Dvd says, the driver/passenger is great - my disabled husband is happy in both the back and front. Good room for my rather tall family and has also come up trumps for furniture removal. Long journeys very comfortable - and driving through London easy peasy with the very good inbuilt Satnav.
I have a Road Angel to overcome the speedo as when it says I am going at 39 mph I am actually doing 30ish.
Nissan in Southampton are excellent and helpful (although my usual contact has left so hopefully that won't change) but I am about to go to my usual 'Independent' (thank you Dvd ;-)).
My insurance, this year, is about £300 fully comp. as the sole driver.
To date neither of us has had any problems and both families are very happy with the X-trail.

I have to say I know two people with X-Trails, and both claim to be absolutely delighted with them (one of these people is on their second in succession).
I can't say I've heard a single one of the half dozen or so Freelander owners I've come across over the years say anything remotely similar. The one person I know now that still has one (a 2002 TD4) only keeps it because they've thrown so much money at it over the last 2 years that they can't afford to sell the thing.
What astonishes me is that the 4wd system is so problematic. If there was one part of a car you'd expect Land Rover to get right......
