2001 1.0 Gear linkage - patrick boyd
Hi im having the problem of getting into 2nd on my 2001 corsa comfort. Ive read that its the gear linkage and ive looked at it but couldnt see any wearing. Which part of it usually wears or breaks? It was replaced in march 2006, is there much chance that it just need adjusting?

its the balls that wear, they are like a hip joint, ball and cup affair, plastic in plastic, no protection, dirt enters cup and grinds away resulting in excessive play, you realy need someone to wiggle the lever about and have a good look you should be able to see the slop

ok so basically the ball and socket will move around and in and out, when it should just be able to turn smoothly? If it isnt worn out would it just need adjusting?

you would normally only adjust/setup if the linkage has been removed, you can certanly try adjusting it, however if there is a lot of play you may make it worse !!!

Set up procedure here but at a guess you will need the new improved linkage from Vauxhall www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=61...7

surley if the first one lsated 5 years the second one could have atleast lasted 2 years though?

Either your latest linkage just needs re-aligning as per instructions or replacement wasn't the suped up metal one from Vauxhall.

just thought id let ppl know that i had ago at adjusting it and followed the instuctions and it didnt go to well, it said to but in a 5mm drill bit into the hole, but that didnt seem to line it up very well. So i had a go at keeping it in line with the hole but moving it too the right abit and know its much better. So if anyone is having a problem with changing gear then its probably worth having ago at adjusting it before you replace the whole gear linkage.
