If it has failed or is failing the suspension may well be clattering. Its a fairly vital bit of the suspension. Replacement is not difficult unless the securing bolts are corroded. Easy job for your friendly independent.

as quoted its not a to bad a job to do and £45 seems reasonable price

Done a few of these myself (Vectra and Omega) and they're not too bad for DIY. Parts are around £9-£15 for each link so £30 isn't a bad price for labour. The last time I did one it took me an hour and 20 minutes of that was getting the car in the right position to be jacked up!
