Route Peterborough to Blackpool - Fri pm. - M.M
Leaving Peterborough area about 5pm this Fri to travel to Blackpool. AA Routefinder says A1 to Pontefract then M62/M61/M55. Does that sound OK and will any particular section be a traffic problem?

Thanks,

David

You should be OK at that time., although if you have the option I would leave it another hour. You'll sail up later on. If you do have a traffic problem it'll be on the M62.

I used to drive up the A1, St Neots to Grantham, and there was way more traffic on a Friday afternoon than on other days. Leaving at 5pm you might be after the main surge of traffic. I have just used my TomTom and it suggest the route are planning and says 3 hrs 30 and 196 miles. It takes into account the date and time you are travelling

There are roadworks at Stamford and Colsterworth, major roundabout/flyover construction. However, these are only resulting in a 50 limit at the moment.

The traffic queues can start even further south than has been mentioned sometimes. Queues start in the Water Newton area occasionally.

If it's really bad when you go and if you fancy it, leave Peterborough on the A605, continue towards Elton, turn right to Wansford, west along the A47, turn right to Wittering and rejoin the A1 (and the queue) fairly near Stamford. This might just save a bit of time, though it's quite a bit further. Nice countryside, though at 5 p.m. you won't see much of it.

Pain to have a hold up in the first 15mins! So is the Stamford section roadworks before the first Stamford roundabout on the A1 (travelling from the south)??

Thanks,

David

The roadworks is the stamford roundabout itself, and backs up before the roundabout as far south as wansford (someone even mentioned pas the stibbington diner!) So yes its jammed going northbound before the stamford roundabout.

You need to hit the a1 past the stamford roundabout.

If you can, go early on Saturday morning :-)

No need to be so drastic - hang around until 6-6.30pm and arrive in Blackpool at the same time as leaving at 5pm.

I learnt a long time ago that long distance journeys between major English conurbations shouldn't be started at 5pm on a Friday.

Anyone interested in the Highways Agency plans for the A1 Carpenter's Lodge improvements (closures/contraflows etc.) over the next few weeks see

tiny.cc/2NVb8

Carpenter's Lodge is the name for the southerly A1/Stamford junction that is currently causing the problems mainly discussed in this thread.

Thanks for the extra info. Starting later is probably best... we will eat on the way somewhere and just need to hit the Blackpool hotel by midnight so that would work out to leave at 7pm or thereabouts.

In the end started a bit early thinking hitting the A1 around Peterborough at 4.30 would avoid the heavy traffic..... wrong! The queues for Stamford were already back to the Water Newton area and almost static. Turned off at Wansford for the A47/back roads local diversion but that was snarled up miles back from the A1 so gritted our teeth and headed off to Melton Mowbray and rejoined the A1 near Grantham. The rest of the journey was painless right to Blackpool.

Really liked the long lit section of the journey across country on the M62/61/60 area. Made night driving in misty conditions so much safer.
