The traffic queues can start even further south than has been mentioned sometimes. Queues start in the Water Newton area occasionally.
If it's really bad when you go and if you fancy it, leave Peterborough on the A605, continue towards Elton, turn right to Wansford, west along the A47, turn right to Wittering and rejoin the A1 (and the queue) fairly near Stamford. This might just save a bit of time, though it's quite a bit further. Nice countryside, though at 5 p.m. you won't see much of it.

Leave peterboro on the a47, cross the a1 at wansford, turn right onto the a43 at duddington to stamford. and rejoin the a1 just before Stamford but after the queue

Pain to have a hold up in the first 15mins! So is the Stamford section roadworks before the first Stamford roundabout on the A1 (travelling from the south)??
Thanks,
David

The roadworks is the stamford roundabout itself, and backs up before the roundabout as far south as wansford (someone even mentioned pas the stibbington diner!) So yes its jammed going northbound before the stamford roundabout.
You need to hit the a1 past the stamford roundabout.
