Replacement registration plates - Rattle
My back one is fairly new and is in perfect condition but my front is in poor state, it is easy to read but some over zealous copper but declare its ilegal and I could get 3 points on my fresh licence.

I have seen this site who can do them for £8.50 but would it be legal?

www.no1showplates.co.uk/index_new.php

I know there are very very strict rules on regarding fonts and text etc.

Thanks.

Also how much is it likely to cost at a motor factors? I might get some for my dads at the same time as they are both in a poor state (mentioned on MOT).

Hi Rattle,

Read the T&Cs - they only supply 'show plates'.

"Disclaimer
Any plates ordered through our website are sold as show plates and are for off road use only. If you chose to buy a plate that resembles a legal plate and subsequently use this on your vehicle we can accept no responsibility for this in any way or form. The term legal on the website describes the item, it does not mean the plates will be legal if that item is used, For example Legal Standard Font is the font used on legal plates. "

Have a look on the big auction, you will find suppliers who specifically state that their plates will have the marking BSau145d, their name and postcode. Seller 'bedalemotorfactors' is one I have just found - they need you to supply V5/licence details. A couple of reliable Scottish sellers I have used are no longer offering plates since the full regs were extended to apply to them on 1 November.

Frankly you are unlikely to be done if you stick to legal font and spacing, and avoid backgrounds and non-standard badges - there are lots of older cars around with legal plates that pre-date the current regs. But if you want to be fireproof, get one with all the markings.

Anything that is clearly illegal is likely now to be picked up at MoT time once they get their act together.

Yep I know it is very strict. I will give Halfords a call, I dont want to go to a local motorfactor as they are all a bit dodgy don#'t ask questions affairs, can'#t see them sticking to the laws on plates.

Basically I am making sure my car looks presentable enough in order to try avoid getting stopped my pcplod, I just can't afford any points atm.

I have just got new plates for sons Focus as the old ones were very badly delaminated.
£12 each including fitting at my favourite MoT station.
Even though the car was being MoTed for the 4th year I still had to provide the V5 and MY license.

There was no exemption for the MoT station even thought the were checking the car over. A tatty V5 is more important than the vehicle plus the VIN being input to the MoT data base. I love that logic:-(

Just found this

www.craigsplates.com/order/plate.php

Seems legal as they need to see the V5 and proof of ID etc so they can be entered into their DVLA records. Very cheap too.

Don't forget to try your local friendly main dealer!

Last time I bought some plates the dealer (about 3 years ago) the dealer only charged me £2.50 per plate when everyone else was £8 plus.

Looks better when you come to sell and you have dealer supplied plates IMHO.

I have always used
www.carnumberplatesonline.co.uk/index.html

Cheap, quick, efficient, no messing with documents.
I have never had any trouble at MOTs, even recently when the tester scrutinised the plate because he had previously failed a "genuine" one with a tiny crack.

Got one from my local motor factor for £10.00, it has all the usual BS marks on it so should be legal. The old fell apart in my hands, would have been in instant fine if they had seen it.

Took apart half an hour to fit as my cordless drill dosn't work so I had to use hand tools and a Bosh electric screwdriver.

£10?

That's nearly 3% of the car's purchase price, I believe :-)

Don't forget to keep a record of everything you spend on the car in the next six months - it might make salutary reading.....
